    thanks for all your advice, it was the motherboard that needed replacing

    More likely a new power socket needed to be fitted to the motherboard! Anyway you didn't waste money on a new power supply.

    The repair was carried out under my dell extended warranty and they said it was a whole new motherboard I needed, I didnt pay a penny anyway so if they were wrong thats their loss lol
