BT Rented Phones

My mum rents her phones from BT and I am trying to convince her to stop renting and buy some so it doesn't cost so much!

The phones she has are about 10-15 years old from BT - can she ask for more updated versions if she doesn't want to buy new phones? Can she ask for ones which have a caller display function on them?

Does anone else rent their phones from BT? It just sounds a bit crazy to me as phones are so cheap!

She can rent newer phone equipment from BT and send her old phone back for recycling. She will however enter a new 18 month contract for the rental of the new phone.

It can work out a lot cheaper to buy a new phone, but some people feel happier knowing it will be replaced if it goes faulty.

  • thanks - yes I think what has put her off asking for a newer phone has been the contract issue.

Assuming she has a modern socket or sockets, phones can cost less than £3 - what is she paying to rent each or hers each quarter?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Think it's in the region of £10-£15 for 2 phones per quarter. She's on the low user scheme.

Even so that's between £40 - £60 /year you can buy cordless twin packs with all the facilities which will have a years guarantee as well, so in effect will last longer than a year

If your mum is like mine, she would rather pay BT rental and be happy that if it went wrong it would be fixed without any hassle

I overcame my mum's reluctance on buying one by getting two, both corded, with large buttons, so she knew there was a spare ready to plug in if one failed, and she could also see an immediate benefit with the large buttons

Which was just as well as she spilt orange juice inot one of them and gummed it all up

Have you bought her a third now - to replace the spare?

what about buying her one/two for a birthday, christmas present?
  • I think I might let my mum "try out" one of my phones in her socket for a while so she can see what it is like using a non-rented phone :rotfl:

The phones aren't recycled and when the rental is cancelled or you take out a new rental phone BT will tell you to dispose of the old phone how you like.
If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.
