If you can be bothered and there was a freepost envelope with it, you can send it back saying "I don't have a TV", but it won't stop them sending the letters every 6 months or so.

If you send it back marked 'no longer at this address', they'll have to send future mail to 'current occupant'. They can't prove such mail was delivered to you, and you dont have to open mail not addressed to your name (as much junk mail is). You don't have to let them into your room or your home unless they have a warrant from the court, and they cannot get a warrant from the court unless they have your name and they cannot enforce a warrant unless your name is accurately spelled. So even if they show up, unless they have a warrant, if it's a bad time you can say so politely. If they tell you they'll be back at a particular time on another day they probably will not return. It's most liekly a tactic to make you pay. But if they return you can start over.

But if you are lying then wouldn't you be attempting to pervert the course of Justice?

Any why lie if you don't have a TV? Just say come on in and see...
  • write back and tell you haven't got a tv and to note their computer so you don't receive any more letters. explain the letter is causing unecessary stress and worry particularly as it's content is threatening and you shouldn't have to put up with this. suggest their resources are better diverted to chasing people who do have tellys and do not have a licence. if their conputer sends out one automatically it should be reprogrammed.

I'm a student as well, I get these letters all the time, and been getting them for the past three years. I pay no notice of them, chuck em away as soon as they arrive. Must be costing the TVLA a fortune in paper and postage costs. They've never bothered me in person, or given me anything more than a "final reminder".

I can't get any reception from my room. Only ITV and channel 4 are watchable, so its ridiculous that I need to spend £150 a year for the BBC channels I can't even watch.

The advert threatening a £1,000 fine is a lie. Even if you do get caught, the fine is around £150, about the same as what a license costs, so don't worry about it.

I'm afraid this does not work with TV licensing. If you send the letter back saying you don't have/watch TV, they will actually presume that you are lying and will still regularly send you nasty intimidating letters.

I hate TV licensing's nasty tactics, it's all so unecessary making you feel like a criminal in your own home when you've done nothing wrong! All those scary ads on tv are just unecessary too. The sooner they abolish this ridiculous "license" the better.

I don't watch TV and I had a visit from one of TV licensing's trained monkeys. He was intimidating and aggressive, and I was very upset after he left. Needless to say I told him he was not coming into my home as it was not convenient.

Don't worry about it, you are not doing anything wrong. They want you to be scared of them. You can safely put the letter in the recycling bin and forget about it.
