It's just struck me that turning off the water supply would make no difference if the vibrations are being transmitted by the pipes.

Im betting when you had the boiler installed and the shower became much more pressurised it was because you now have a power shower - or a pressurised system. If so, I bet there are pumps somehwere in the system that are running all the time (not sure if they should be or not) if they have not been installed correctly you will get vibration through the pipes, and or the floor/wall .

    Thank you for replying.

We had the boiler installed but we didn't have a shower installed it was just the shower over the bath connected to the taps? Pumps have been mentioned but the guy that came to check the boiler said that the pumps couldn't be working with the water and electricity turned off so said it couldn't be that?

    Kind Regards

I wondered that if it was coming from the street turning the water off is not going to make any difference. But the water people are insistent that the noise is not coming from the pipes?

I think, unless things have changed since I worked in electricity supply, the utilities are not really interested in this type of problem. I would expect lip service only and then return to the depot and chuckle about it over a mug of tea. You really need to find the problem yourself and tell them what it is.
I'd try a sounding stick from pipe to ear if you don't have a stethoscope, same thing around all the possible (and improbable) sources of the problem.

  • I too am intrigued by this thread.
I think like others have said it would be good to get a structural engineer in, expecially as cracks are appearing.
Could it be broken or cracked drains?

Alternatively it could be an anceient burial site and the spirits are stirring.

Try digging a large hole to see if you discover any bones / treasure. When the dead are disturbed they tend to rattle which could be causing the hum.

The last option is that it is an original scientolgy crypt and that the Thytans are emerging. Be afraid be very afraid!!

 Oh my gosh the thought of this scares the **** outta me:eek:

    Hi,

Sorry about your predicament I have a dd who doesn't like sleeping so fully empathise with feeling tortured. Unfortunately I have little to add except I also live South of Birmingham in Redditch and have the red clay too!

You said you have been in your home for 8 years but had the problem for 3....surely thi s is key. Can you find out if anything has changed around you in that time...work on your boiler was mentioned but any other outside changes? Worth searching local papers? Also are you sure flight paths haven't changed? I know they have by us, and I'd prob. guess it was about 3 years ago - we didn't use to hear planes at all but now we regularly get the hum and vibration of planes going in and out of Birminghma Airport and it is def. worse at night.

    Good Luck.
    Boo!:rotfl:
  • Finally, an update! Sorry I have not posted for such a long time - things are catching up on us, unfortunately.

We had a good two weeks away in a caravan and although the weather wasn't at its best - it was brilliant. No vibrating, no humming - heaven. So we were very distressed to come back home. It seems worse than ever - now both children wake during the night and find it hard to get back to sleep.

    Update
    • We have spoken to both neighbours now (and although we have not been in their houses and vice versa) they assure us that they can't hear anything in their houses.
    • The water board had said they thought it was next doors air conditioning unit but we have spoken to next door and it hasn't been switched on since May (currently unplugged from the electricity). (Water people wouldn't listen when we said the noise and vibration was already in the house when next door had it fitted.)
    • Mom has obtained the electricity plans from the electricity board (free of charge). According to the plans there appeared to be something between our garden and one of the neighbours. When mom queried it they said it was just the information that explained what type of wire was used in our road.
    • We are waiting for the water plans - £35 charge (unlike the nice electricity people)
    • We were up in the middle of the night a couple of days ago trying to find the source again. We tried some of the pipes in the garage but could isolate where the sound was coming from. We need to try and get a stethoscope and do it properly.
    • Mom has been going around the house with a glass and feels that it is worse through the floor of the children's bedroom (which is over the kitchen). But apart from the central heating pipes under the floors we can't work out what it could be. We have already had the heating checked by two different people and the vibration and humming is still there with the water and heating switched off.
    • We have had the house alarm and security lights checked and serviced so the noise doesn't appear to be coming from there.
    • Mom has made contact with a noise doctor and hopefully he will be coming out to do a survey.
It seems to be worse - we wondered with all the rain and water if it wasn't something to do with the water?

Anyway, there is the update - I'll try and update more frequently from now on. I still owe thanks to all the people that have so kindly posted - it is very appreciated.

    Kind Regards

Thanks for the update FHM - I have been checking back every few days to see what's been happening! Looking forward to hearing what the noise doctor says!

    Keep us posted, best regards,
    Kirsten
