Is £160 a month normal for gas and electric?

I pay by direct debit and the gas is £79 and the electric is £78...0

We're in a 2 bed semi. With 2 adults and 1 toad we pay 40 per month at the moment.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move
Lily contracted Strep B Meningitis Dec 2006  Now seemingly a normal little monster.
Love to my two angels that I will never forget.0 -
Spot lights are probably using alot more energy then energy saving ones but not everyone likes those.
Small stuff like putting the hot water from the kettle in a thermos instead of reheating it would save money but again its too much hassle for most and its harder when you share a house like that I know0 -
Are you in arrears with the supplier or is the landlord/owner etc?
I was under paying on my direct debits (they set it up too low) over winter so now my payments have gone up to give me chance to pay the 'arrears' off.I would have used my own initiative if someone would have told me to!0 -
I pay the same all year round, we worked out at over the year it came to x amount of pounds and divided that by 12 to work out an average spend per month. That way we pay more in the summer, building up credit, which is then used in the winter.
I like knowing the round fee which is coming out of my account.0 -
I also prefer a regular monthly payment. But is your £160 a month is an accurate twelfth of your consumption? Or, is it, as greensprout was suggesting, a twelfth of what you're being charged because you've had arrears or underestimated bills?
You really need some accurate figures for gas and elec units, whether daily, weekly, monthly or annual so that you can see what you are using and where you need to cut back.0 -
I'm not in arrears. :-D
This time last year when my previous house mate moved out, we paid off the balance so we started on £0. Then I rang southern electric and they worked out that I should pay the afore mentioned amounts and that would make sure that I built up credit in the summer which would be settled in the winter. The bill I got recently showed me slightly in credit by about £40 on each...
We had the heating on lots, which is obviously something to cut back on... electric wise it's hard to see where to make massive savings...0 -
How much is your elec a month or year?0

spotlights 50% replaced by 3w bulbs worked very well in my kitchen. Nice light now. Biobulbs are energy saving bulbs and give off a full spectrum white light, also good for SAD. They are not cheap but we bought them gradually and they are now all over our house. You can get them cheaper than this site

Are they a lot different from the cheaper energy saving bulbs? I hate them. I'm not kidding when I say they made me feel depressed when I had them in my livingroom.0
