Pick a bad make and you can have problems as described.
Pick a good one and you will be fine.
I'l suggest "Spider Tuning Box" as another to look into.
I know people with common rail diesels who have run these for over 2 years on more than one car with no trouble.

if your running hot and melting lambda sensors then the tuning box your using isnt doing its job correctly, melting things is a sign of running lean(too much air/not enough fuel) The small resistors that are sold on flea bay fool your engine into thinking either the air is at a different temperature/velocity and add more fuel, this usually has the unfortunate result of adding too much fuel and "washing" the bores(cylinder walls) leading to a lack of compression after a while and an engine rebuild.
However, an ecu re-flash or tuning chip(superchips is a good example and has been around for years)will improve performance/torque and give better mpg overall(due to the increased torque), my best advice is find an owners forum for your particular make of car and ask there, the anoraks will soon let you know which make is any good for your car, for £300 my car will go from 150-180bhp, 250-350ftlbs torque and get in excess of 50mpg(47 at the moment)

Good advice I think, you'll find people who haved used a particular make for an extended period and they will give a lot of detail on fitting and operations / living with it.
