Where has my disk space gone?

I have just reloaded windows xp from the rescue disks on my asus laptop.

I seem to have very little disk space now - any ideas why this would be?

It's an Intel centrino duo with supposedly 120GB hard drive and 1024MB of memory.

Thanks in advance,

PO xx

  • I'm assuming that you have checked the pie chart of the disc space in the Properties of your C Drive.
Go to My Computer > C Drive > Check what is on there - any files which are large? Or nothing at all?

  • That's odd, my C Drive is 145GB and when I installed XP it took less than 5%.
I'm afraid that if you have nothing on your C Drive, I can't help any further - sorry.

Sounds like you tried reinstalling without wiping what's already on the disk.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

i followed the instructions that came up on the recovery disk.....it didn't give me the option to reformat the drive. the instructions are all in french and although my french is pretty good, we're talking about stuff here i wouldn't necessarily understand in english!

as i remember it gave me the option to choose one or two partitions to recover.....what should i be looking out for?

  • Hi, Looks like you have installed a second copy of windows. Do you have a C drive and a D drive each with windows folder?

Whilst you have a working windows pc, now is the time to double check you have backed up your data look both document folders on each drive letter..

Delete partition. Cannot be done without a utility, something like FDISK. This will not be an option with your rescue discs.

Re-Format. Useful for a home pc geek guy. This will not be an option with your rescue discs.

Re-Install. This is how to set the pc to the factory default settings. This is the only option with your rescue discs.

Once you are happy to go ahead with the rescue disc follow the instructions and delete all active partitions if there is an option, C, D. (e,f,g,...if they exist) Then select to do a clean install, ie not an overwrite keeping all other settings.

After about 20mins you should be back to normal. Reinstall any other programs you need and your data folders.
