Me thinks they be fibbing... Never heard of them auctioning off used carpet before! Not damaged anyway! If you decide not to keep it then make sure you walk in oily boots all over it before they come to take it up ;)

Anyway - laminate - it will only warp if you don't mop up any water etc. And it's pretty tough - I have a dog and ours has been down for a while now and still doing fine with slobs from her waterbowl, muddy paw prints, various spill etc..
And it's very easy to clean too :) And no it wouldn't smell of wee!

I have laminate in my lounge/diner and its fab, i have two children and a dog and no its not warped or stinks of wee.

It looks very good after 5 years, more than the carpet on the stairs which needed replacing after 3 years, I will admit though, I don't clean the laminate every often, but you do have to vacuum every day it is as dusty as anything. I would never ever go back to carpet in the lounge again.

What about the skidiness? Does it get scratched with your dog? And is it warm in Winter? That's another reason for replacing it for another carpet as we have thick underlay which is new-ish so we could keep that, whereas we'd need another load of stuff to put down underneath laminate at a guess.

I would LOVE laminate if it was warm and the kids didn't skid. Husband needs convincing, it's him who thinks up all these reasons why we shouldn't..

i have laminate all through downstairs, hallway, lounge dining room, the only place i dont have it is the kitchen ( cant decide on tiles or lino) i put mine down myself (i'm female...so that shows how easy it is!!) i've had 2 dogs one from a puppy and my laminate hasn't warped or taken on any pongs, I do have the strip things in the middle of the rooms and provinding you get the correct ones and lay them down correctly then you shouldn't have any problem and it'll look good. Laminate is easy to clean and still very popular so i shouldn't worry about it when you come to sell your house

its not that skiddy... it only becomes really skiddy when furniture polish drops on it and you wipe over it!!!. The underlay isn't that expensive for it and you'll be surprised how warm your rooms still feel with out that cushyness under foot

I'm very nesh so if i felt cold with it all i'd go back to carpet!!!

It's no colder than carpet to be honest. And our's is laid on top of the standard barrier thingy and then straight on concret. I have the worst dog for shedding and it's a blessing! You just hoover it all up in a minute and once in a while you give it a quick wipeover.
Dog does sometimes skid, but only when husband winds her up and makes her run at 50 mph through the house - she adjusted very quickly!
In scandinavia wood and laminate floors are very popular and I grew up with laminate floors - sure I took a couple of tumbles when I forgot to put slippers on, but I also had hours of fun purposely sliding back and forth :rotfl:

I'm seriously trying to convince hubby to get it upstairs too as I hate having carpets in the bedrooms... all those yucky yucky dustmites and what have you that can hide in carpets! Eeewwwwww....

I have a runner in the hallway that has non-slip backing - think it cost us £15 and when we have kids I might get some rugs at least for the crawling stage - but only rugs that can go in the washing mashine!!!!

What insurance company you with i dealt with many of the big names and they never auctioned anything off. I know some do in america so they may have started here its been 3 years since i did that job..... I will try and make some enquiries this weekend for you.
You can touch the dust but please don't write in it !

Would you like to speak to the man in charge, or the woman who knows whats happening?
  • I have an American top loading washing machine - in general it is great - uses hot and cold water - has loads of different programmes and is quick and can take a load the size of which you wouldn't believe.

I have had it a few years now and after cleaning up the flood it made the first time I used it (our waste pipes were too small to cope with the torrent of water it produced when emptying} anyway got new pipes !!!!

Now to the washing powder, I ruined more clothes than I care to remember, the were covered in white patches, just by using biological powder, there is no powder dispenser on the machine you just sprinkle the powder over the clothes, a bit like a twin tub and I didn't realise there were bleaching agents in the powder. Most of our dark and black clothes were ruined, as of course, I kept on washing for a couple of weeks (doh)

Now I use liquid for the machine and haven't had a problem, though my sister did point out, just last week, why didn't I put the powder in the bottom of the drum and the clothes on top?

I'm not surprised that they are keeping the old carpet/charging you to have it back.
They have paid for the replacement although there was an excess on the policy, which tends to help keep the premium down.
If a customer claims off me for a damaged item and I make a payment to cover the cost of the item, I insist on having the damaged item returned to me.

Our insurance company is Prudential, it was a firm called Independent Inspections who they sent to check the carpet.

I think they sent them because I had asked if there was a chance we might be able to rescue the carpet instead of having a new one fitted. I wondered if nowadays they could dye the part back or something instead to save the hassle and money, but alas not.

I do understand why they would take the carpet back, but if it's not standard practice I do feel quite fleeced. If it's something I can argue with them then I will, I hope they're not rubbing their hands because we didn't argue the point when she told us.

I really appreciate your advice on this! I'm warming to the idea of laminate now maybe just in the dining half, so the kids can finally take the plastic wrapper off the paint I bought them last year!!

If the worst comes to the worst, £50 for a new hall carpet isn't bad, so I'm looking on the bright side (that's prozac for ya, lol!)

That sounds like it could be fun for them!! (And my husband no doubt)

I went for sprung mattresses for the kids instead of foam because I figured the bouncier the better. It's not always about practicality is it, sometimes it's just about how much fun you can get out of it :D

You should see my 18month old going 'uuuuuuurrrrr' with her forehead on the washer when it's on spin. HOURS of fun. (Hope there's no lasting damage mind you, lol!)
