changing from a living flame gasfire to stove?

Hi,

we moved into a new house a few months ago and have a livinfgflame gasfire which neither of us like realy espesially as we left behind a duelfuel stove so we are wondering if it is possible to remove gasfire and replace it with a stove. I presume we would ned to get a stove that you can fit the flue to the back of (are there such things?)
I realsie that its prob best to contact someone who fits them but thought i would make this my first port of call, also can anyone recomend a decent make of stove and which is better multifuel or woodburner?we never got a huge amount of heat from ours poss was tosmall tho and was from ebay so not convinced it was the best one.

thanks in advance

You will need to get someone in to give advice.

    But some pointers

Don't get a stove to big. It is better to get a small one and burn hard than a bigger one and let smoulder. There are many around that are multi fuel. If you go above 5kw output you need an airbrick put in(or similar)

Alot of stoves have the flue outlet top or back.

Is your living flame fire behind glas or open?

Get a HETAS registered installer to come and take a look. It depends on your chimney and the type and condition of the liner, but it's very possible that your current flue will not be adequate - to quote from this HETAS webpage, "Under no circumstances should a single skin flexible liner designed solely for use with gas fires be used with a solid fuel burning appliance".

We have a small Hunter stove, a Hawk 3, which is more than adequate for our living room (12'x16'). As John said, it's better to run a small stove at full throttle than choke back a big stove, because that helps avoid the risk of creosote building up in your chimney, and thus the risk of a serious chimney fire (regular sweeping and the use of properly seasoned hardwood are important for the same reason).

I've just posted on 'i want to buy forum' asking about the Hunter Hawk 3 - I was looking online last night and we only want a small one and that looked about right. Prices seem to be around 500 for the stove... then there is the liner and fitting. Can you give me any advice please as to where to go and how much to pay and how what and where??

sorry to hijack the thread there for a min OP :o

We used these people, who are based a few miles from where we live (and that is a very useful website with all kinds of woodburner info). Unless you are in this area I think the best thing to do is to start looking on this HETAS page.

I think we paid a total of around £2,500, which included knocking out the existing 1940's fireplace and fireback, plastering and tiling the builders opening that was exposed, installing the stainless steel double skinned liner (we needed over 30 feet of that), the mineral pellet filling that goes round the liner to fill the rest of the space in the flue and keep the gases hot all the way to the top, a vintage pine mantlepiece and the stove itself and all the making good. If we had been able to DIY some or all of that the cost would obviously have been a lot less.

    Thank you.

We've got a builder coming in to rip out the old etc and re plaster - so its just cost of parts and fitting..

I'll look up those sites now - thank you again.

  • Can any one recommend anywhere in the Leeds area?
  • You might also want to bear in mind that as it's a structural alteration to your property that you should get a building warrant for the works., (Speak to your local authority Building Control Officer) Might not be an issue straight away, but it could be if/when you come to selling your house.
  • Im assuming it it will use the chimney that the flame effect fire is using. For me it wont be a structural change as its a 1902 terrace house but yeah worth noting for newer properties.
