Not sure what the purple lines mean, but could you plug a monitor into it? That way you would find out if it was your screen itself or the graphics card?

Nope. Its got Vista. if they are from top to bottom Dh says its because all the filaments for the screen are in the hinge of the laptop and wear and tear means that over time some of them go, hense why some lines are there some aren't.
