  • I have to say some of the 'longer' reviews are absolute rubbish. They drone on for ages and I am so bored by the end of it I can't remember what they are reviewing. Remember it is the quality of a review, not always the quantity (i.e. number of words).

I think a review of about 400-600 words is perfect. It is punchy, usually gives an opinion and also gets to the point.

I think it all depends on the subject you're reviewing. Travel reviews tend to be longer, especially if you're describing a city. Books, CDs and DVDs can all come in between 600 and 800 words. Electronics reviews can start at 700 words and go up to 2000 words depending on the complexity of the device. Those are rough figures based on my own reviews.

There is no one-size-fits-all standard for reviews... just write what's personal to you, avoid waffle/padding and the length willl take care of itself. As an aside, rating is exactly the same. Rate according to how helpful you found the information, not what everyone else is rating. If you find a review with 99 VUs on it, your rating can still legitimately be SU if you find the information to be lacking or incorrect in places. :T

I once SUed a review by the then Music Guide. It was a CD review, almost 2100 words in length and by the time I got to a third of the way through the review, I was still reading about the history of the band and hadn't read anything about the CD.

I've just started doing reviews on Dooyoo and I've found my reviews getting a little longer each time. My problem at first was that I've just done a year at college and I've now started an OU course, where essays have to be short and succinct, for example condensing a 100 page chapter into just 750 words!!

So at first I was trying to keep them as concise as possible, which was absolutely the wrong thing. My reviews are now starting to flow a bit more :)
Moving onto a better place...Ciao
  • There's a difference between short and concise, though. Dooyoo reviews don't have to be short, but it helps tremendously if they're concise.

Has anyone had any issues with Dooyoo today or have they changed their rules? I have written 3 reviews today, my first in a week, and haven't been paid for any but all have been between 270-500 words. Have received a few pennies from people reading though.

What category are they in? Speaker's Corner, perhaps? I don't think you get the 50p for posting in SC.

They are, but about half of my reviews are in there and I got paid for those I think. Oh well, will steer clear of speakers corner just in case!

  • No, you wouldn't have been paid. 1.5p per read and a possible £1.50 for Crowns, yes. But no 50p posting bonus.

Why not post there, anyway? Is it purely because you don't get the fifty pee?

You can easily earn £3 per day by posting 6 reviews, but chances are you will only post those 6 reviews, they'll be of poor quality and you'll be too busy writing to give any rates back to the site and rates are as important as the reviews you post. Chances are, people will think you're greedy, money-grabbing scum.

I have to say that I think that's a bit extreme, although it's obviously your own personal opinion! I wouldn't consider anybody writing reviews on Dooyoo to be 'greedy, money-grabbing scum'! Anybody considering joining Dooyoo would probably think twice after reading that - expecting to be criticised and abused by established members for trying to earn a bit extra on the net! That is why most of us are here this site in the first place, after all.

The only posters on Dooyoo that annoy me are those that sign up and pump out 20+ reviews on the first day - each review just slightly over the minimum 150 word limit - and don't even have the courtesy to rate even one other review on the whole site! I don't think they are 'scum', they just haven't understood the recriprocal nature of Dooyoo and don't understand the importance of reading and rating other people's work.

From my point of view, so long as somebody is also rating other people's work, I can't see why they can't write as many (good quality) reviews as they have the spare time for. If Dooyoo wanted to restrict numbers of reviews, they could quite easily introduce a maximum number of reviews allowed by each member per day. (And no - I don't churn! I write on average, 2 or 3 reviews a week but would write more if I had more free time. I also always return rates as well as reading reviews that genuinely interest me.)

As long as you're putting time, effort and thought into your reviews and returning rates, then most people will treat you and your reviews positively and you'll earn a little bonus, as well as enjoying yourself. :T
