Virgin Broadband - dont charge me then MASSIVE bill

Options
The card I use to charge my Virgin Broadband account to was lost (and cancelled) about June 2007. I completely forgot to change the details on my Virgin account and when I did realise (Aug 07) I was surprised they hadn't cut me off - which is what they did last time - while also sending me an email to an account I dont use. The account isn't on a contract and you just need a month to cancel.

I realised then that they had not cut me off AND they they were now not charging me either.

Not wanting to be in this odd limbo of not knowing when the big statement would come through asking for all the back-dated £14.99s I phoned up to try and sort this out twice (once in about Aug, thenn again in September 07).

Both times the indian gentlemen at the end of the phone couldn't find my details on the system to sort it out. This is using my phone number, address, postcode and name. I wasn't a customer of theirs apparently. I sent them a letter, got no reply.

So I left it.

Well finally got the letter I was expecting one of these days.

'There isn't a valid method of payment on your account. This means we couldn't collect the payment of £337.62 from your bill, so the amout is overdue.'

They go on to say they'd like me to phone them asap to set up a new DD to prevent any 'interruption to your service'.

What's my best course of action?

My line would be - I phoned to pay, then phoned to cancel, you didn't know who I was either time. I haven't been using your service. End of.

What I liked about the service I'm on was it went from month to month (meaning you could cancel and change service with a months notice). This was good when I flatshared as you didn't know how long you'd be staying there. It worked out to my disadvantage the last time my c.card changed and they cut me off (which is what I expected to happen).

Anyway, how should I handle this? Advice appreciated.

Thanks,

bbuser
