  • if you are not familiar with where exactly you are going to, beware of the just outside of the town destinations. You might technically be in Sheffield for example, but you'd actually need to get another train or bus to get into the city centre.
  • used the southampton to london mega train a few times last year...

top service only thing is if u want it cheeper then you gotta go off-peak
  • I've used Megatrain for the past 18 months to travel from Yeovil to London.
the earlier you book your tickets (up to six weeks an advance) the cheaper it is. You get given a code which you need to give to the conductor on the train when they ask for your ticket. They check it off against a list.
the trains have designated sections to sit in but most seem to be flexible about this as long as you stay in the same carriage. You get the same service as the other customers.

The megatrain website is straightforward to use. Remember tho that these trains are designed to fill the empty commuter trains once they have dropped off the commuters so don't plan on using it for work. If you are going to London it is nigh on impossible to get there early and leave at teatime. It is worth looking at the price of a B&B with the savings made from these prices.

I've just come back from a 3 day trip with two children to do the touristy thing in London. It cost me £21 for two adults, one 6 yr old and one 4yr old who travelled for free. That was going up on a monday afternoon and back on a thursday morning (9.20 from waterloo). It was a fantastic trip and one that will stay in our memories forever.
  • Megatrain on the VT routes will be withdrawn soon as Arriva have not agreed to carry on with the cheap tickets.

With megatrain, the guard gets a printout of all journies - the RPIs won't have a copy (normally) and therefore just glance and carry on. :)

Something to look for is if you can't go all the distance on your ticket - as megatrain tickets are sold in co-ordination with ATOC rules then just combine your tickets and stay on the same train if it calls.

Note that the train times for the Weymouth and Bournemouth route are changing in December, too.

    And www.megatrain.com/uk/ works equally well.

Just look at the top line on that web page and watch it change between megabus.com and megatrain.com :D
