Have you tried ebay?
There are brand new, sealed copies of older versions of MSOffice available.
Anything from Office2000 upwards is compatible with Vista. Office97 works on XP.
I recently went down this route after upgrading to Vista.

If it is just Word , there is a free word processor program called AbiWord, it's only 5.9Mb (Windows) so a lot smaller than OpenOffice. It's powerful and simple.
Remember to tick "Associate Abiword with .doc files" and when you save, save as .doc if you need other people to open it.
Download it at http://www.abisource.com/0 -
You can now also download a free suite from IBM Lotus with Lotus Symphony - it uses open office format and will save and open MS Files - have started using it and it is really nice to use.

Not much point in it though as it's based on the OpenOffice code and as such is always going to be out of date compared to simply getting OpenOffice itself. OpenOffice 3 will be fully released soon which will have MS Office 2007 support for example. Symphony is based on OpenOffice 1.1.4 to give an idea of how different the age of the code is. It also has far less functionality and components."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

If you just want OpenOffice, then why not get the Portable Apps version which is just under 83MB in size (small enough for even the cheapest memory stick) and just install on any PC. Here is a link http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable:beer:Proudly paying as little as possible for stuff since birth:beer:0
