    Hi Rose,

We're with Virgin and despite being on the TPS list, were still receiving the occasional unwanted marketing call.

After reading on another forum about keying in code *65 to activate (and#65 to de-activate), we have stopped receiving calls from withheld numbers. Maybe just a coincidence, but it's worth a try!!!

The activate and deactivate just does as it says, you need to subscribe to ACR in the first place, the reason you might want to deactivate is you might be expecting a call from someone who withholds their number and can't not withhold it, once you have received the withheld call you can switch the service back on. Remember with it deactivated you are still paying for the service because it is still on your account, if you want it removed you must call in to get it removed. Activating and deactivating is simply for allowing calls when you want.

It could be the service was on the line but not activated, hence calls from withheld numbers were getting through. Note: this doesn't usually prevent calls from networks that are unable to transmit numbers, as they aren't being purposley withheld.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

It's also worth pointing out that the ACR service is FREE on Virgin, but BT charge their customers £10pq for it.

A few xNTL areas offered it free at one time, other areas and xTW from the beginning it was £1 per month.

Now as Virgin Media they charge £2.50 per month for ACR.

We dumped ACR when the price rose from £1, though shortly afterwards we dumped VM and went with BT for a phone line, but then dumped that and went VoIP only for over 3 years, now only having a VM phone line again due to it being included in a retentions deal with cheaper TV and broadband. Use VoIP for most calls and VM for inclusive calls at evening and weekends.

We have been worried sick about our daughter and are paying the 2.50 to virgin to stop with held numbers, personally I think these people profiteering from people who are being harrassed should be shot!

Briefly, we insist that our daughter has a phone line, she has a pay as you go mobile for emergencies only and that is all she does use it for, her landline is basically her lifeline to her friends, family etc. Lately, for no reason, she has been receiving calls at all hours of the night from someone with holding their number, they then dial her mobile and with hold their number on that, this will go on for about half an hour anytime between 1 and 6 in the morning. She is reluctant to change numbers as she has had them for years and is always carefull who she gives her numbers to, she never gives out the mobile and land line number together to anyone. She works hard, bless, but doesnt have much money at the end of the week on minimum wage and paid all her bills. She called Virgin and said she was receiving nuisance phone calls and asked if it would be possible to have these calls barred "oh yes of course we can, thats £2.50 a month", apparantley according to Virgin if we were with BT it would cost £3.91. I know its only a few quid but she has very little as it is and was becoming a nervous wreck from it all so we pay it for her.
What sort of a company can make a charge for this, do they not have a conscious? How can anyone find it morale to profiteer out of making a young girls life a misery through harrassment?
Thankfully, the 2.50 is working, she switches her mobile off at night and after a few months now feels safe and secure again in her own home at night.

We still get the service at no cost, are you ex TW? NTL never charged.
  • I know how aggravating it can be! I have received as many as 20 of these calls in as little as 10 minutes! I suspect is some fool from India trying to sell and/or scam you and many other people. The best policy is to ignore them all, they do give in in the end as they eventually get the hint, if not, pick it up and mess with him and mock him, he will get annoyed and start swearing like they all do, but they rarely try calling again. If they do, simply pick-up and then put the phone down, it will give the impression of a dead line.

I know how it feels to be harassed, I suffer it on an almost daily basis, and do agree that phone providers such as BT, Virgin Media (mine), and any others should do something about it to stop it and then it would not cause the stress and anxiety and perhaps malice that these muppets do, not that they would care anyway, all they want are your credit/debit card details so they can rob you. I of course don't fall for such a ploy, I am wise to such tricks, I sometimes string them along until they ask for bank card details, then I hang up! Trust me, it works!
  • Alternatively to subscription there are device out there that do call rejection. See cprdistribution.com/cpr-call-blocker/

Havent tried it personally but looks like it would pay for itself within at least 2 years wrt £2.50 call rejection costs, and has a database of nuisance numbers which would add functionality
  • I've got ACR on my virgin landline. It's free. You dial:

    *227# - to activate
    #227# - to deactivate
*#227# - to check status of ACR

It was free for me when I lived in Manchester, and it's free now in Southampton. Never called to activate. It's always just worked. The same for my parents.

Have just tried this on my Lincolnshire area landline, and received the message - 'Sorry, this service is not available on this line'
    :(
