Marrow - any receipes??
I have managed to grow a huge marrow :j but I just don't know what to do with it! I've eaten marrow before and it just seems a bit tasteless and watery.
Does anyone have any good tasty marrow ideas (I don't eat meat although I do eat fish if thats any help!)???? (or is watery and bland normal for a marrow?!?!?!)
Thankyou!

I often cut boat-type chunks off big marrows, remove the seeds and bake them. Then top with rice and a spaghetti bolognese sauce. If you're a vegetarian, you could use a smoked haddock & cheese sauce instead of Bolognese. Baking marrows makes them less watery and does seem to concentrate what little flavour they have.0

I made marrow soup yesterday - I'm not a fan of just plain baked marrow for the reason OP mentioned.
I just fried the marrow along with some onions and garlic, added a bit of parsley and basil, salt and pepper and some chicken stock, then blitzed it all with a blender. It was really nice if I don't say so myself.0 -
Peel the skin off then cut slices about 40mm thick.
Scoop the seeds out then lay on a bit of baking parchment on a baking tray.
Get a packet of ready made dry stuffing mix any flavour you like.
Make the mix up fairly stiff.
Fill the rings of marrow with the stuffing mix bung it in the oven till the marrow is cooked ( fairly softish )
Serve hot..............0 -
or this, based very loosely on a lovely dish I was served in the Massif Central in France (alongside a steak but yoiu can give that a miss if you want).
Peal the marrow and then slice very thinly. Saute the marrow with loads of garlic an some thinly sliced onion.
When it starts to cook add a few tomatoes, peeled if you want but preferably fresh ones. Add loads of marjoram and stew with the lid on until they start to exude juice. Then stew more open until they are soft but not mushy. This makes a virtue of the watery habit and makes it tasty.
Would go well against a bean stew or with hunks of bread to mop up the juices. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

I have just made this soup today with a marrow given to me. I added some milk at the end, it is lovely.
1lb Marrow
1 medium onion
1 oz butter
fresh parsley
pinch nutmeg
salt and pepper
3/4 pint light stock and just cook as in the post above
I added a little paprika at the end.
I have some marrow left and will make some more, definately0 -
Thankyou to all - I will have a go at one (or maybe two - if I feel particularly enthuasistic LOL!) of your suggestions at the weekend. I am particularly warming to the smoked haddock and the soup ideas! :-)0

Peel, remove seeds and cut into 2cm chunks. Bake for an hour with butter, salt and pepper. Did this during the week and was popular with my husband and toddler!0

I forgot to say that I added a bit of cream and some grated parmesan at the end.0 -
It goes really well in a vegetable bake.
Steam chunks of Marrow, Butternut squash, onions and potatoes for about 7-8 minutes then bung in a baking dish with some shredded spinach or chard or cabbage greens and some quartered tomatoes. Mix in a little oregano and parsley. stir in cheese sauce and top with grated cheese.
into a medium oven for about 30 minutes.
it's gorgeous alone or as a side dish.
In fact now I'm craving it so will have to make that for dinner tonight.;)Living on Earth can be expensive, but it does include an annual free trip around the Sun.0 -
the marrow chutney recipe i posted here is really very good - especially with cheese on toast! (and its easy!)
