Axa are a good company in my experience - try getting a quote direct from Axa, they are the underwriters for several insurance companies. Cover seems much better than the healthypets cover, it's lifetime cover with 7k per year, each and every year. It's a £50 flat excess with no extra percentage for older pets. They were good at paying out too.

Depends if you're happy with the level of cover from healthypets then, IMO 5k per condition wouldn't be enough for me as with per condition policies once you've reached the limit then they won't pay out anymore for that condition.

If you've got young animals that would worry me, for an older pet then I think it's absolutely fine. My cats are only young, when you think that 5k might have to last them another 19 years it doesn't seem worth the risk.

Whether you go rfor axa as the underwriters or the main insurance company I still think they are good insurers though.

isnt 5k per condition every year enough though? i got the impression it was £5k every year, not £5k for its whole life per condition. flippin heck its confusing!

It is confusing isn't it! I read that as 5k per condition which they would potentially pay out in one year if needed, if they paid out say 2k in one year they would pay out the remaining 3k in subsequent years on the condition you renew your policy.

Definitely don't think it's 5k per condition each and every year which is why Axa's own 7k each year (not linked to individual conditions) is much better for me with my young cats.

id like to say a big thankyou to topyam for the defaqto link as i have just gone through it and narrowed down my insurance choices to 3/4 all insured per condition, per year with lots of cover including alternative therapies etc at reasonable prices under £20!
  • May I ask what insurers they are, as I need to take out my policy by 08/08/08 and am still as confused as ever by it.

I got Halifax Thomas - my M and S, too good to last with no excess nearly doubled and then they bunged in £70 excess as well this year.

This happened to me. But it sounds as though you have been given the premier cover which is a higher premium per month and £70 excess. When my m&s insurance was up for renewal they sent me a letter saying my premium would now be £17.99 per month and £70 excess for the premier cover. I rang them to tell them I wanted the standard cover which is £12.99 and the excess is £90. I know this is a lower cover but didn't want my monthly premium to go from £13 (which is what it was before) to £17.99.

When I originally took this policy out I had no excess and my Pug had two eye operations and two leg operations. You can imagine how pleased I was that I took out the excess free policy! Her treatment altogether came to about £6000 which M&S paid in full, plus my petrol money to the eye specialists.

However, m&s no longer do the no excess policies and I am stuck with them because my Pug needs to have expensive eye ointment for life. The total cost of the ointment per year will be about £260 plus yearly checkups at the specialist which cost £120, so the £90 is a bargain really.
