As far as breed goes, the dog's an F1 cross (cocker spaniel/mini poodle) so if the insurer specifically lists "cockapoo" (established name) that's what I enter, else mongrel.

Reading some more AXA seem to get good reviews, so that's what I'll prob go with.

You're right about the breeder insurance. That fixes the gap.

Solid. No. You should be aware that, on average, you will always lose money to insurance companies. After all, they have to make a profit. Therefore, if they covered routine annual stuff they'd have to charge you for it annually, making the premiums a lot larger.

Also spaying/neutering isn't covered. Otherwise people would join up, pay a year, get their dog fixed and then not renew.

Bear in mind I'm a huge fan of pet insurance. Although the companies win on average, it's the extremes that you're really insuring against.
  • Hi Planet, I am collecting my Cockapoo in 2 weeks so very interested in post. They seem such great dogs, cant wait. Will be interested to see what other quotes you get. Are you going for premium policies rather than standard? My puppy also comes with 6 weeks free insurance from Petplan. Would love to hear how thins go with new arrival as you will be a week ahead of me but my pup will be 8 weeks on collection.

Wow - collecting ours today - in a few hours. We're all very excited and in the last hour or so of "puppy proofing" (as if!). Our first dog, so a little daunting but really looking forward to it.

Definately going for a policy that covers illnesses for life. IMO anything else could be a real problem . Also contacted NFU by phone and whilst they quote a 4000 figure, this is per illness, per year. Also given their history am inclined to go with them. My other alternative is axa at ~7000 per year with some additional benefits. Cost is within ~1 UKP of each other. Both are life policies.
My puppy also comes with 6 weeks free insurance from Petplan. Would love to hear how thins go with new arrival as you will be a week ahead of me but my pup will be 8 weeks on collection.
Sure I'll try to PM you. Our pup is 7 weeks today. Need to find some cockapoo hangouts..

Thanks Bromley, be interested to hear what the Halifax quote for your new year's policy. I cant understand why a couple of the posters above got such high quotes from them as they came out as one of the lowest for my dog. May be it depends on your post code.

If anyone is thinking of getting a dog PLEASE consider all those in rescues first - 8000 a year are put to sleep. Id never buy a dog from a breeder when so many are desperate for homes.

I don't think we can afford our cover any longer, our renewal is £180.00 as our cat is now 14. I phoned AXA and they said they had been told not to offer discounts as they'd changed they way policies were calculated now, it now goes on age postcode gender?

So sorry to hear that gilly - have you tried to see if any others can cover a cat of that age? Or whether your own vet has a scheme for insuring?

3 months ago we got a rescue dog she was a year old last week! where can I go for insurance for her as she is aggressive to people though fear, she was very ill treated as a very young pup(under 4 months) but as far as we know she not bitten anyone, we are taking her to dog training to help her get over the fear of people, she fine with us and other animals, is there any insurers out that who will take on a pup like this? If so who are they? All the insurance people we looked at won’t take aggressive dogs! Help please!
