What to do/see in Whitby

There is a shop that does glassware and the "Whitby lucky ducks!"
You can see someone actually blowing the glass if your timing is good.
There is also a "Dracula" exhibition- one day we were walking along and were startled to see "Dracula" chasing a tourist along the front!!!
"The Royal" was filmed here and you can see the buildng they used and the "Whalebones" that are on the cliff."This site is addictive!"
Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA
Preemie hats - 2.0 -
Wouldn't bother with the 'best fish and chip shop in the world' - the prices are horrendous and the food's crap! The one two doors down is much better.0

The Royal was filmed in Scarborough, the hospital building is on the Esplanade.
Scarborough is only 20 miles away if you want to expand your scope for things to do.0 -

Totally agree. We've holidayed in Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby for several years and the first couple of times we went the The Magpie because of its reputation. Much prefer the food in the Quayside. ( http://www.fuscowhitby.com/index_QS_01.html ) and Trenchers ( http://www.trenchersrestaurant.co.uk/ ) .
The last time we went there we had a gorgeous fish and seafood casserole / hotpot at Trenchers.
As for things to do. I'd echo what has been said before plus add pottering around the antique type shops on Skinner St on the West Cliff then go for a round of crazy golf at the top of West Cliff. (It seems bizarre that a harbour on the East Coast faces North....)
Finally don't miss the chance to taste the ice cream at Beacon Farm, it's delicious and they do great banana splits and knickerbocker glories. http://www.beaconfarmicecream.co.uk/
Have a great time in Yorkshire. And don't forget the saying, you can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much. (I'm allowed to say that being Yorkshire born and bred, hence the username!)
I'll se'thee!0 -
I adore Whitby, I try to go at least twice a month for a day out. I live in Middlesbrough, which is about 45 mins away.
All the places that have been mentioned are what makes Whitby the great place it is today.
Whitby is a Gothic's paradise but even non-goths love it too.
Take the tour on the double decker bus up to the Abbey, it will save your legs and the commentary on the way found is very informative, the pick up point is next to the band stand, near the pier.
If you are interested in buying Whitby Jet, then do some research (Please)....there are only 4 shops that sell ORIGINAL Jet found in and around Whitby and not halfway across the world, that makes its claim to be Whitby Jet.
Visit this place, http://www.whitbyjet.net/whitby.html
the chap is one of the original people that look for jet in the local area, he knows his stuff and will not steer you wrong. He is as passionate about Original Whitby jet as I am.
And as has been mentioned before the Whitby Lucky Duck.....it only costs £2.50 per duck (I should know all my friends and family have one)
Stay away for the Magpie restaurant, he painted it that colour because that is the football club he supports. Very over priced.
I truly hope you have an enjoyable time at Whitby, I intend to go back there very soon.0 -
The Magpie is far from overpriced - try Harry Ramsdens for rip off fish and chips. If you want them cheaper Magpie do have a takeway now.0

Whenever we go to Whitby there are always a long line of people spilling out along the pavement waiting to get in to the Magpie, but my friend went there and said it was nice, but nothing to write home about. However, I did have fish and chips from their takeaway next door and the meal was very very greasy, and made me feel uncomfortable after eating it.:hello:  please play nicely children !0

The trouble with Harry Ramsden's is that it's not in Whitby.Age & Treachery Will Always Overcome Youth & Enthusiasm !!
