Hi
Can anyone suggest activities/places worth seeing in Whitby. We (hubby, daughter(14) and son(18)are spending a couple of nights in Harrogate and would like to go to Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay. I have looked on the T.i. site but would prefer personal recommendations.
Thanks

Whitby is a fab place. Family connections mean we've been several times and always enjoyed it. The place is a delight in many ways depending on your tastes. The Abbey itself is scenic and fascinating on the cliffs with great views (lots of steps to climb). The beaches are good...it's possible to walk along to Sandsend and get the bus back (or walk!). The missus tells me the shopping is good! Great bookshop and Tog 24 outlet. It's also foodie heaven with everything from upmarket rerstaurants to "England's best fish and chip shop",The Magpie Cafe ( you may have to queue)...and the incomparbale Botham's Tea rooms (the one up the hill from town is MUCH MORE atmospheric) , There are all sorts of boat trips including an old lifeboat, a trawler and a jet boat. You can watch the sun go down while enjoying a pint or other beverage at The Shambles overlooking the harbour and then there's the ghost walk and the Dracula Expereince... and the Whitby Bookshop has cut price books upstairs...You'll love it. Everyone does!
Oh and th cakes and coffe in the Mermaid's Purse are to die for!!Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -

If you're lucky, the seal will pop up to see you. It likes to see the fishermen - it knows it's going to get the scraps of bait!
On the way, you could call into Eden Camp - the war museum - which is quite close by on the A64.
You must climb the steps to the Abbey - all 199 of them!
Have fun

Whitby's a super place and I'm not trying to put you off, but just be aware that currently there is a sewage spill into the river which flows into the harbour. Yorkshire Water are trying to sort it but you might just want to check before you go.Age & Treachery Will Always Overcome Youth & Enthusiasm !!

the best part of whitby is strolling the cobbled streets and looking at all the lovely things, famous for whitby jet of course if your wife is into jewerly, there is a joke shop my brothers used to pop into and buy stuff to wind us up!
i love whitby for its atmos though i used to go in winter to avoid the crowds as i lived nearby, does of course do lovely fish ad chips as mentioned above but its a fun place to go purely for a wander, be warned though lots of stuff is lovely to look at but expensive to buy so not very money saving.
the thing we used to do was count the steps as you go up to the abbey as they arent sopposed to add up the same on the way back down, keep the kids busy anyway! plus wandering round the graveyard for count draculas grave:rotfl:
aye up im having a trip down memory lane!

The best thing about Whitby is the A171 then the A170 then the A1M back to Yorkshire.0

Robin Hoods Bay - check the tide times and go when it's out. The cliffs are good for fossil hunting.0
