Motorola KRZR problem

I was texting and nothing I pressed on the keypad would work and I couldn't come out of the message screen or turn off.
I took the battery out and replaced it and turned the phone on, it came up with a random string of numbers. These eventually stopped after about six minutes. I could then exit that screen.
Now every time I press a key I get other numbers appear. If I try to go into the menus, it responds as if I've pressed the keys more than once and I can't text as it will only show the first letter on the key.

Is my phone dead?

yep, software screwed

if its out of warranty its basically a doorstop they aren't worth much for spares as motorola don't have a new model with common parts
