I am one of the most peace-loving people you will find but when I gave up smoking there were times I felt a strong urge to smash the face in of anyone within reach, and heaven help them if they should actually give me more reason to want to other than than simply being there.

Giving up smoking is so hard, you will get totally wound up with or without your OH support, I invested in a big pillow and battered it to bits when I felt tempted to smoke to manage the rising rage inside.

Get yourself over to the MSE stop smoking support thread, plaster on the patches and keep out of the way of everyone, especially your OH, oh and also stock up on celery to help with the desire for that hand to mouth action.

I promise you it is so worth it when you succeed.

well done lasting 48 hours! i wish my OH would give up (im a non smoker)

I agree every time you fancy a fag go and do something to distract yourself like paint your nails so then you cant really, do your toe nails, wash the dishes, do the garden, have a glass of wine, eat chocolate, go for a walk, have a drink of water :)

    Good luck

  • hi lita

just wanted to say ive given up for 3 months and one week now lol (yes im still obsessivley counting)

and in that time ive had 6 fags - now that works out at 2 fags per month, when i was smoking it was 10 a day minimum.

just think that its all about little steps - my oh doesnt help becuase he isnt a smoker and never has been, i say im dying for a fag and his answer is go buy some then lol - really not helpful when you are using all your willpower

just keep plodding on and do the best you can

  • well done so far! Keep it up.... I was on 40 a day when I gave up and just did "right, I'll get through the next 10 minutes without one" then an hour, then a day and then once you've done 2 weeks without, the cravings really do go away (honestly!) and it's just the habit of lighting up at particular times that you have to tackle.

You will get there in the end (I've just passed my 12th year since my last one) but as everyone else has said, you really have to rely on yourself to give up, no one else. Try not to let your OH put you off and prove to him that you are the stronger person. Once you've given up, you'll get your sense of taste and smell back, you'll be able to fill your lungs with fresh air and psychologically you'll know that you've done something really hard and succeeded at it.

Good luck - if you don't put one in your mouth then you can't smoke it... minute at a time if you need to! :)

Why let him get to you?

If you are on SSP, you can go to an Asda, Superdrug, Boots or Numark Pharmacy. There will be loads more places also. Basically if you are thinking of stopping smoking, you can pop along to one of these places. You do a carbon monoxide test and they talk through the various products available and which one you will be suited to. Each week, your carbon monoxide levels are checked and if they keep down, you get you next weeks supply.
Why try and do this alone when you can get help. If your OH wants to smoke, let him. Once you reach a week, he will feel :( and you will feel :D, imagine how you will feel after 2 weeks!

Congratulations on taking this step, it is so hard. I have gave up 3 times, but back on them again :( I just can't find the willpower this time so I'm hoping it comes easily some day soon.

It is a big deal, just remember, it's because you have smoked that you need a ciggarette, not because you are wound up. This is the fight you have on your hands, not one with your OH.

A bit drastic, I know, but if I felt the urge I would slap myself in the face and say 'choose life'!

Good luck and try to stay strong.

P.S This has made me realise I should take my own advice!

Try not to think of it as giving something up rather than regainging control of your life - are you using patches or an inhalater or anything like that.

try doing something like a huge jig saw or a simple cross stitch - whatever suits you - I can do either of those for ages and not realise how much time has passed.

Full of good advice - can't take it myself.

    good luck.

  • Hi Hunny,

Well done:A:A:A:A:A:T:T:T:T:T on your 1st 48 hours of going without a cigarette, I' found out I was pregnant and DH was begging me to give up for weeks for some reason I was craving more for a cig whilst preg (weird huh??) and you know for some people its soooo easy and for others like myself it was soooooo difficult (Ive got such an addictive personality lol). Anyway i started weaning myself off cigarettes and I kinda used the nicorette inhalor for a couple of days (taste NASTY). Now I like to say I have totally given up :T:T:T:T (fib) I only have the odd one on a Saturday or something (kick me) but Im always praising myself "I've haven;t had a cig or X amount of days" lol:rotfl: OH just gives me a ya know dirty look.. hehe, but atleast I can truthfully say I can live without smoking (something which I thought was IMPOSSIBLE) Im hoping to stop totally so even the odd 1 i do have. Just praise yourself and tell yourself how good you've been for 48 hours...and as for the other half tell him you wont kiss him coz he smells of cig smoke lol...thats wat my OH did and despite me sulking the minor arguement it worked ya know...:T:T:T:T
