great books for Old Stylers

Options
I don't know if these have been mentioned before but they are true O/S books - Hovel in the Hills, Kitchen in the Hills, Garden in the Hills by Elizabeth West.

She moved from Bristol with her husband to a remote run down wrecked cottage in North Wales and set about being self sufficient in the 1960's. She writes beautifully about the wind turbine, Charlie, the garden, the weeds, the floods, how they made money and how they lost it sometimes too. She went on to write a cookery book, Kitchen in the Hills which is full of cheap but delicious homemade food using ingredients that she grew and found in the wild - she was miles from a shop, most of the walking was cross-country. I haven't seen Garden in the Hills yet but it's one that I'm looking out for.

Hi, are these books still in print or do you have to look around the second hand book shops? they sound like books I would enjoy reading.
  • I found mine in a charity shop, they are both little paperbacks and out of print by now I expect

    Hi,
Yes, I think I mentioned Kitchen in the Hills in a thread on favourite OS cookery books. I got mine in a charity shop, too. I also managed to order Hovel in the Hills from the local library a couple or so years ago, because I wanted to read it once I had seen the cookery book.

Aye, I think we have the kitchen in the hills somewhere listed. Could you post ISBN's to help people find them too, please, and when I catch up with the indexing the others can join our collection.

that book sounds interesting , have just looked on ebay for kitchen in the hills but nothing. maybe i might become a member of the library.
  • Try www. abebooks.com - links to secondhand booksellers all over the country. I've just checked "Hovel in the Hills" and there are loads of copies on sale - cheapest at the moment appears to be $1 (i.e. 57p), plus postage.
