Last tenant didn't pay phone bill

I'm not sure if this is where I should post this so apologies if I have got it wrong.

I am looking for some advice. The previous tenant in the flat I am renting had a 12 month contract with SKY for the house phone. However he has left and not told them. we have been sending the bills back saying not at this address and phoned sky to tell them the problem but they say there is nothing they can do as it is a 12 month contract.

Our home phone is locked so we can't make outgoing calls or get broadband. Is there something we can do to get the phoneline in our name (without incurring the previous tenants bill of course) so that we can have the internet at home?

Tell them it was a 12 month contract with a previous tenant not with you and have a look round this site for any other ideas http://www.otelo.org.uk/

You may have to get a new line installed by BT at a cost of £125.

Or if you do not mind an 18 month contract get it for £29.99.

You will not be able to do anything with the old line that is in contract with someone else.

If I was you I would open the other persons mail (by mistake) and keep copies and notes as the default on the billing could cause trouble for you.

Make sure you write to who ever the letters are from and state the person no longer lives here, don't just return the letters as not known at this address.

And make sure you keep records/notes of everything.

How do you know it's a 12 month contract and Sky's no business discussing private information either. It's really none of your business and what are you doing using someone else's account? Sounds a bit strange to me. You wouldn't use his credit card if he left that too would you?

Best thing is to get a new telecom supplier to try and sort it or go for a new line.

You can open the other persons mail so long as it is not for fraudulent purposes, I work in postal communications. Good idea to keep copies.

  • Just on the subject of BT... I moved into a new property on 4 July 08 and placed the order for a new line on the 6th July 08, I am still waiting to get a new line. I have called BT virtually every day from the 6th and just keep getting different stories all the time, from techinical problems, previous occupant did not cancel line, which they have, wrong address to the order, although I have received confirmation of the order and go line, which I hasten to add was mean't to be yesterday, 6.8.08, and yet again we are still waiting. Does anyone know what to do next, I don't know what to do next. We have now been told that we need to place a new order, whihc we have, and have now been told the 12.8.08, I have no confidence in the service or know how of BT and no doubt on the 12th I will be in the same situation as before... What does it take to be able to get a line live in your house?????????????

Well the first thing that came to my mind was compensation for all the missed dates that you had to take off from work.

Next time you speak to them ask about it, it may be the kicking they need to get into action.

    Then Email the CEO:
