Water Softener Salt

I just bought a new water softener from East Midlands Water Co. It's supposed to use about 5 kg of salt per week, and I bought an initial 30 kg from EMWCo for £20. I'm sure I could do better than that. Anyone else with a water softener out there - where do you get your salt and how much to you pay? (I'd rather not buy more than about 100 kg at a time.)

Thanks Wallbash. How much do you pay for a 10 kg bag? Where do you buy it?

It says 2.2 kg per regen, and I understood they regenerate 2-3 times per week, giving me about 5 kg a week. Sounds like that could be an overestimate. at 67p per kg I'm still keen to reduce the cost.

    :D:D

You tell me , i am spending over 20% more.
Prices vary a lot, but my cheapest at a large cash/carry pet store is well over £8 for a bag. I tend to buy only 4/5 a time, thats enough for me.

£20 for 3 bags delivered. It was the first supplier I looked at so I'm sure there must be cheaper.

I never knew they used so much salt !!!
But surely you have to balance this cost against the saving on detergents / lime scale etc etc.
Why not have a look at catering wholesalers for bulk bags of dishwasher salt ???
I know my Bookers has 15kg bags but never looked at the price.
  • 84 litres of water per regeneration too. But I'm not on a meter (yet), so that doesn't bother me (yet).

Try your local agricultural dealer, such as :

I pay about £8 for a 25kg bag. Or try yellow pages for a salt dealer.

You do seem to be using an awful lot of salt, a 25kg bag lasts me about 2 months, that is regenerating twice a week.

This is very expensive. I buy 25kg for £6.50. Garden centres, animal feed places, B&Q among others stock 25kg at prices between £6 and £10.
