Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a peaguot 207cc. 2007 reg around 10,000 miles.

i have a vauxhall vectra that i want to trade in, its a 51 reg with 111000 miles on the clock, so not great!

My question is where do i start, i had a look on autotrader to get a rough idea of how much they cost etc. Now what?
Going to have a quick look at the dealership later but as i am a girl in her mid twenties i have a feeling they won't take me seriously or offer me a good deal, i won't be buying today but want to get some ideas of what trade in price they will give me etc. I don't want any finance as i will be a cash buyer, wil this get me a better deal or worse?

Thanks for any help or advice you can give me with regard to negoitiating a discount and getting the best value for my car.

Also does anyone know of any reputable dealers that will sell a peaugot 207 in Nottingham/South Cheshire/North Shropshire?

    I'd sell the Astra yourself.

Being a cash buyer does not get you a better deal these days - the people who sell cars go for finance as it makes them lots of money. You'll find they will try desperately to sell you a car on finance even though you intend to do the better thing and pay cash. And they'll try make out it's for your benefit - but in reality they're trying to fill their own pockets. So I think any request for cash discount won't go far I'm afraid.

... but of course *DO* try haggling. "If you can give me it for £x I'll buy it right now" etc etc.

Get a used car valuation on the parkers website. Enter your car details and it'll spit out a figure. Good ball park to begin with.

Oh yes, it's probably best to sort of let them make believe you'll pay finance right until they agree on a price and you shake hands, then ask if you can get mats and a tank of petrol thrown in etc - and then tell them you're paying cash. (i.e. if you give it away too quickly you're paying in full in cash they might not give as good a discount).

Working at a dealership, I can tell you now, it's a buyers market. Dont allow them to baffle you with big words etc, they will have approx £500 (depending on the value of the car) to play with on most purchases, and get freebies like mats etc chucked in. The credit crunch has hit car sales in a big way, so they will snap most guys arm off for a sale these days...

    Good advice.. ;)

Do not buy or sign up for any car at your first visit, tell them exactly what you want, leave your details and walk away, they almost certainly will get back to you offering a better deal.

Go to at least 4 or 5 dealers.

Play dealer against dealer, they all want your hard earned money.

If you're going to a dealership, DONT BUY AT THE START OF THE MONTH!

They will give you better deals towards the end, they need to hit targets.
  • my mother was looking at 206 / 207 cc's after owning a 1999 206 for 9 years without 1 problem!

Howver in the end she wanted something a bit quirkier and went for the quirky Colt CZC, fantastic little car (even with the 207cc in my opinion)

Have you also considered the tigra softtop thing

I read somewhere that most places have something like 15% to haggle with, so I wouldn't accept less than a 10% discount. Find a car for, say, 5k, offer them something like 4,3 or 4,4 on a take it or leave it basis. They'll probably try and make you sweat it out "ooh, I'm gonna have to go and call my manager" blah blah blah, but they'll probably take it in the end..

Its true that if you are female you are unlikely to get a good deal compared to a man looking at the same car, What Car? magazine has done studies on this.

If you have a brother or a male friend then I'd take them along with you and pose as a couple of something. The salesman is less likely to walk over you if you have a male companion.
