Solid wall insulation

Hello
Has anyone had this done either internal or external?
We're thinking of buying a property with what looks like solid walls (bricks are a mix of flat and on end) and I'm just a bit concerned about the efficiency of the place, the HIP gives it the worst rating plus not a very high improved rathing.
Would appreciate any feedback about how much either improved your house and the cost of putting it in.
Thanks

Cost of gas will come down eventually or inflation will take your salary up. Solid walls keep out the wind, so they're not as bad as all that. I'd use it as a bargaining point and knock down the asking price. Not sure how much extra it will cost to heat, but if you look at average fuel usage being £1000 per year, if it was 20% more then you'd be spending £200 per year. Live there 10 years and that's 2 grand. Not going to break the bank. Don't go off on a guilt trip over the CO2 issue. It would be far more CO2 intensive to knock this house down and build a new one, so just get them to drop the price and live with the extra costs. Think of it as a bargain.0

My brother in France is renovating his house, and uses these fantastic thermal boards. They are a sort of layer of foam type material with a layer of plasterboard, that can just be glued to the wall, and then painted or wallpapered. It also exists in an acoustic version that is thermal and acoustic. It is available in France in any DIY shop, such as Obi. They cost around 15 euros each board, it is quite large.
I have just started to look if this exists in the UK, by doing a search on thermal boards, you might find something.
Otherwise I will be popping over to Calais...!0 -
Very difficult to do anything cost effective with solid walls. As previous poster says you really just have to accept you are buying a larger fuel bill which is no doubt reflected in a lower purchase price. A detached house is obviously going to worse that a terrace. HIP's are very crude and no old property will do well.0

Sempatap is similar but comes in rolls. You stick it to the wall then wallpaper or paint over it: -

We would def look into some of these boards if we go for it, the rooms are huge so wouldn't miss a bit of space!!0

I'd ask yourself...would you be considering this issue if you didn't have this energy efficiency information?
Have a look at this article here : http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/home_improvements/home_insulation_glazing/solid_wall_insulation

Im in the same boat as you. iv been looking round for ages for some inslation for my terrace house that has solid walls.
The main problem in winter with the walls is condensation on the walls, they can get quite damp and am told Wicks polystyreen wall covering stops this.
The sempatap looks good and if you get in touch with them they send you a price list and a sample but is very expensive when you add up the rolls needed, special glue, edgings and all the rest.
have been told a cheaper option is Wicks polystyreen paper, put on double. one vertical then one horizontal then a thick lining paper. Think im going to try this method, though the thermal boards mentioned sound a great idea0 -

Oh well let's know how you go on with the Wickes product. If I'm not mistaken the Wickes product will be that polystyrene on a roll. I used it some years ago and found it reasonably ok, however, one thing I did notice about it is that you have to be really careful that you don't catch it as it dents easily. But if you put two layers of it on plus a heavy grade lining paper, I guess that might just about eliminate that problem.0
