  • Hi

Thanks Nuttybabe for posting the picture for me.

The white/black socks came in a 12 pack that I purchased, there were only those ones and some beige in the heart pattern. I bought them when I first started making monkeys, which was nearly 1 year ago, so can't help with where to get them now.

I did see some white ones with black spots in Bon Marche today when I was out shopping, but they came in a set of 3 with black with white spots on, which is not always that good for making monkeys (I don't think they look as good).

I usually embroider a personal message on the hat too, I turned most of these hats around as they were ordered ones, but you can just see that the yellow/green one has Shaun on his hat

Gems they are brilliant - you have been busy!!

Your hats are great, are they knitted or sock hats?
You can stand there and agonize........

  • They are sock hats. I just a plain piece of sock in a matching or contrasting colour. I do either a one bobble hat (mauve and pink stripe monkey) or one with a bobble on two corners. The two bobble hats seem to be the most popular.
  • well, as a newcomer, I have read, on various threads about sock monkeys
so i found this thread, and i have read through all 99 pages:eek:

well done everyone, they are brilliant:T
and although i cant sew, i so want to have a go

I'm making a sock monkey now I've overcome my fear of my mini sewing machine (I was worried I'd sew my finger to it!) But I have a few questions if someone can help?

    1. Where do you buy your stuffing from? I've just bought some from ebay as places like poundland and homebargains didn't have any cheap cushions etc.

    2. What stitch do you use to attach the tail, arms, mouth and ears to the body?

    3. How do I sew the mouth? I've noticed some people don't give their monkey a mouth, I'm undecided at the minute.

I can't wait for my stuffing to arrive so my monkey will look more lifelike! This could get addictive :)
  • I buy my stuffing from Dunelm mills - I sell my sock monkeys and have to be sure that they meet the fire and safety regulations, so want to be sure I am getting the stuffing from a reliable source. I have found the one from Dunelm is a consistant quality too, I have tried others in the past and end up with a lumpy monkey or a very hard one etc. I chain stitch my mouths and all my seams are firstly tacked together by hand to get the stripes matched up and then I straight stitch them, stretching the sock as I go, and then do an elastic stitch as well just in case they get stretched otherwise the seam may split.

It takes me between 2-3hours to complete a monkey from start to finish.
I stitch the tail, arms etc with a ladder stitch and always stitch around them several times to ensure they are firmly in place.

After stumbling on this thread by accident, reading all the zillion pages, I got myself some socks and started stiching. My first sock monkey is done. And I'm quite proud of it. It looks really good! Maybe in my eyes only :p

I've used the stuffing from an old pillow and it worked quite well.

I've now got a few pairs of socks lined up to be monkey'ed this weekend. Nephews, nieces, friends, they're all going to get a monkey :rotfl:

Thank you all for inspiring me with your pictures and descriptions.

Afternoon all - and a huge thankyou for all the sock monkeys. My year 11 students are all busy hand stitching their own sock monkey as a de-stressing activity before theys it their GCSE's. Their stitching may reduce me to tears of laughter but they are cherishing their efforts - and thats what its all about isn't it?

Will post a picture when they are ready.

  • I just want to say a BIG Thankyou to you all on here for introducing me to the world of Sock Monkeys - its FAB :)

I finally put up the courage today to join up. Since reading this forum I have bought the book 'Stray Sock Sewing' & fallen in love with the world of sock creatures, I may have gone a little mad in the Jan sales buying socks!

I'm not sure how to post images or links on here yet so any help would be great :) but if you go to my blog you'll beable to see what I've made so far.

I so want to make more but my Kitchen & Bathroom need decorating 1st so I must resist...I must! lol
