Storing Kids Toys!

In a previous house we had an understairs cupboard with a small-ish door that opened into the living room. We wallpapered the inside of the cupboard and put up adjustable height shelves - the toys fitted into plastic storage baskets with larger stacking toy boxes two-high on the floor under the bottom shelf. Like a little branch of Early Learning Centre

My eldest daughter was 4 when I had her baby sister - the eldest liked to go into her cupboard and pull the door shut behind her and play make believe house games (I hasten to add there was a light in there!) - so I had made some pretend tie back gingham curtains and velcro-d them to the inside of the door and painted a pretend view from the pretend window which we stuck to the door!
Anyway, the midwife had come round to check up on the new baby and had been sat in the lounge for ages, had a cup of tea and a chat etc etc - when suddenly the door to the understairs cupboard swung open and out strolled the 4-year old - the midwife's face was an absolute picture!!! I told her we were going to have to move now we had two children as we would need a bigger cupboard!!!!!

in my ds's room (2) we have one of these http://www.vertbaudet.co.uk/baby-nursery-maternity-clothes/Boys-Shelves-with-storage-boxes.aspx?ProductId=V705033062&DocumentId=V389&CompanyId=V&Path=2823/2888&source=
and 1 of these Item number: 130243774948 (ebay) for all the books and its jammed packed! this was one of my best buys, i'm so glad i brought it as we have what appears to be our own library :rotfl:
in dd's room (5) she has a pine 4 shelf unit from b&q and something similar to this to keep all her shoes in http://www.vertbaudet.co.uk/baby-nursery-maternity-clothes/Girls-Storage-box.aspx?ProductId=V705033074&DocumentId=V389&CompanyId=V&Path=2823/2888&source=
but the one she has doubles up as a little bench. she also has a wooden under bed storage draw which holds mainly soft toys and you have 5 big stuffed cats gawping at you when you walk in the room! lol today we also brought a little storage box from the works 2 for £10 to keep their dressing up stuff in, she choose high school musical and ds has Cars.
i have also just given her an empty shoe box to keep all her pencils, pens and crafty bits in as i'm fed up with stepping on them lol
thankfully! we dont seem to have too much of a problem with not knowing where to put it all now
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A0 -
We have some Pax wardrobes from Ikea in DS room. We don't have any door on them. We have shelved them out and put plastic storage boxes on the lower halves of them. He can pull the boxes out play with stuff, then we work on him putting things back into them! He can't put them back on the shelves by himself yet, but I have hope for the future!

We also have a wicker blanket box type thing in the living room where we throw most small portable toys?

We love the trofast system from Ikea, plastic boxes in a wooden case that can be arranged in lots of combinations. My 6yo has even declared one of them his "accessories" drawer

One of my biggest problems is soft toys - my two have still got thousands, even though I've got rid of loads. I've got some of those pop-up type laundry basket things which I keep them in - you can get various designs for boys and girls - and they look fairly decent in their rooms. Home bargains are doing animal design ones (ladybird/frog) for £2.99.
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
i love tidy-books - a bookcase that fits behind a door so you don't need a bookcase in their main room area. they're £99 though, so if i had girls i'd buy these instead http://www.vertbaudet.co.uk/baby-nursery-maternity-clothes/Girls-Book-Shelf.aspx?ProductId=V705013299&DocumentId=V361&CompanyId=V&source=4'bad mothers club' member 13

Homebase do a great unit for £40 quid. I've got two stacked on-top of each other in my boy's room and I'm going to get another two for the baby.

LOL
Anyone else with a magical solution? I'll be watching this thread.
I do wish we could get rid of some of my dd's stuff, place looks like the bull ran out the china shop then went crazy in the toy shop accross the road. I just can't part with any of it.
These are good for storing cuddly toys in.Booo!!!0 -
My daughters (She's 7) room has a built in big wardrobe so thats full of her boxed games and 2 pop ups....she has a display cabinet (looks like a bookcase with doors at the bottom NOW reduced in the clearance in argos for £36.99, typical!) in her room also because she collects Disney soft dolls and disney snowglobes so that keeps it neat.... I got her a few bits of verbaudet furniture for her books. She also has a single bed with pull out storage the same size as the bed so the wee bits and pieces go in there.
My son whos 3 has a large floor to ceiling (just about) storage rack (argos was about £50) and the coloured plastic boxes (holds about 12 boxes)..he has a mid sleeper and you'd be amazed the amount you can get under there!..he also has a few bits of vertbaudet things for books etc.
I have no toys in the living room but have a room at the back of the house I've made into a kids living room type thing..with a plastic box of toy figures and a plastic box of random toys... when kids come to visit thats where they play, not in the bedrooms. I also have a bookcase full of kids books in the kitchen.
But hey I reckon if you have kids theres always going to be a mess with toys everywhere no matter how much storage you have!
Edited to say that the links crispeater gave, thats the same bits near enough that we have...the one with the load of boxes holds quite alot!
vertbaudet have a sale on right now...a bench box type thing, we got last years version and its great for wee shoes etc! Think its reduced to £11 or so right now! (might be more, I've been looking at loads of stuff this morning)
good luck xxYou may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0
