    Car Running Costs £ 140.00

What kind of car do you have and how much do you spend on fuel per month as that seems very cheap? As well as fuel, does that include tax/insurance/MOT/servicing and consumables (tyres etc)?

Yep that is everything, very new, very small car. 4 mile round trip to work so very little petrol on 30 mph roads.

Just an observation really but Car Running Costs and TV Licence are not really essentials in my view.

You could live without a TV (plenty of people do from choice) and if you have just a 4-mile round trip to work you could perhaps live without a car (bus, bike)

    I class essentials as:
    1. a roof over your head (so includes mortgage/rent and council tax, house insurance etc)
    2. light, heating, water, phone etc (utitilies in other words)
    3. food and groceries
And that's it. Everything else is to some degree down to choice.

:rotfl: I thought someone would have picked up in this earlier! These are essentials to me. After all I don't want to start up all guns blazing and then get bored in 2 months and give up. If I am in for the long haul then a car and TV are top priorities!

Just done some online quote and looking like it will be about £250, so that is great.

nights out - extra from months essentials
credit card bill - none (I might do one of those signatures that say this!)
do you have pets - none but I might get a gold fish
savings - that will be OP into offset type mortgage
Boiler cover or buildings maintenance - £4000 slush fund already saved which I will OP into offset type mortgage and then I can still get my hands on it if needs be.

Only £62 for council tax, you are very lucky, are you sharing a house?

I live with my partner in a 1 bed flat we bought in Oxford and it is £116 a month!!! Oxford I tend to believe is second only to London in terms of cost of living.

I know it is very cheap. I will be living in Lancashire and because I will be living alone you get a 25% reduction. It is in band A so it really can't get any lower.

    gifts for Christmas, birthdays etc.

A budget for ongoing decoration, we all change the wallpaper and curtains from time to time, don't we?

A budget for an emergency fund - there's always a rainy day whenthe washing machine goes on the blink and the repair person says its cheaper to replace than repair...
