Transferring files from old Win ME hard drive to Vista

I've just bought a media centre player and found an old HDD to test it with. Problem is the HDD (Win ME) has some pictures on it I want to get off and back up.
Have tried to copy over my documents folder with no success - Vista simply does !!!!!! all.
It is not an option to disable "simple file sharing" via folder options the way you can in XP.
Need to get these pictures off before I can format the HDD and test out my new toy. Any ideas folks?
Any help would be much appreciated - am all out of ideas here.......

something like this http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.474
this would allow you to use the HDD externally, like a USB flash drive, and transfer things across?Russia is HERE0 -
Thanks for your reply - i've already got the HDD in an enclosure and using it via a USB 2.0 cable.
Just can't get these files off - it's driving me bonkers!Lightbulb Moment April 2006.Pay off All Debts by 31.12.2014.CC1: £5594, CC2: £164, OD1: £200,Total:£59580 -
That's odd. Perhaps the documents you are trying to copy across are in a "user-specific" folder (i.e a user account on the old ME machine,) and it might be to do with permissions. I'm not really sure how Vista would handle all this. Maybe someone with more of a clue will be along shorlty. Sorry!Russia is HERE0

Are you getting any messages or errors?
The Vista machine should allow you to copy / paste the files.
Best thing to do is connect the drive to the vista machine.
Browse to the folder that contains what you wish to save.
Right click on that folder and change the permissions to give everyone Full read / write access. Make sure the "apply to sub folders" is ticked too.
Then you should be able to copy all the files within that folder to your Vista machine.Laters

Probably a permissions issue or ownership. How much do you know about this sort of thing yourself?
Your going to want to right click, click properties, go to the security tab and look at who has permissions to your my docs folder on the old hdd.
Also go into the advanced section and check the details in the owner tab and post back what you find.0 -
Thanks for all of your replies, I know a wee bit about permissions but the main problem here is there is no permissions or security tab.
If I could change the permissions I reckon I would be away and be able to copy them over.
I'm using a laptop and a 3.5 enclosure with the old HDD in - so not an option to pop the HDD in the case and do it via the IDE cable unfortunately.
Any ideas of a way I can find/show that security tab??
Thanks again guys :TLightbulb Moment April 2006.Pay off All Debts by 31.12.2014.CC1: £5594, CC2: £164, OD1: £200,Total:£59580 -
Open My Computer
Click Tools at the top and goto folder options
Click the View tab and then scroll all the way to the bottom of the advanced settings section looking for Simple File Sharing
Untick this and then check for the tabs again0 -
Its not an option in Vista to do that MBNewB :-(
I have disabled use Sharing Wizard - but still no tabs!
Have now also tried with an XP machine - HDD keeps crashing. So might just have to format the HDD and forget about the pics.Lightbulb Moment April 2006.Pay off All Debts by 31.12.2014.CC1: £5594, CC2: £164, OD1: £200,Total:£59580 -

Hi Zabel,
I had exactly the same problem. In the end I took my new vista PC and my windows one to a well known PC place. It took 4 days to do!! Ten minutes after I had got it back I got 'Internet is not working' on my new vista, I spent a couple of hours with the helpline and tried everything. I tried to copy to disc the info but no good, in the end I had to use sytem restore and lost the lot!
I keep my fingers crossed that you don not have the same problems.
Best of luck.:smileyheaMagenta0
