Hello,
I was hoping to get Virgin media in my new flat but the letting agents said you have a communal Sky dish and all the flats are connected. My question is this, i cant afford £17 a month for their basic contract, but at the same time I really cant live without access to channel 5! (I am addicted to Neigbours) sad i know, but there are worse things to be addicted to! Anway i was told that if i get a sky box and plug it in, i should be able to access some channels for free. I have been offered a box by someone, but I have no idea how this would all work, so any help would greatfully be appreciated.

Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

yes, it will work.. you might want to invest in a freesatfromsky card though, which i think costs £20..

What you'll get is what's called "Freesat from Sky." You can plug the box straight in.
A lot (but not all) the free channels are available even without a card, though I don't know if Five comes into this. To get all the Freesat channels, Sky charge £20 for a viewing card.Dave. :wave:0 -
For Five you will need to get a card.
And they will do the switching on by satellite when they are good and ready. It won't be the 4 hrs they mention.
Kept me hanging about ..try this..try that....all on an 0870 number.0 -
If you can get your hands on an " ex-subscription " card it will work as a " Freesat from Sky " card, a card is needed for Ch4 all of the Ch5's and Sky 3, the rest don't need a card.;)0

You could also buy a "freesat" digibox from Argos, Dixons or Currys. (It won't get you CH5). It WILL get you BBC high definition (if you buy the HD version).

thanks for all the replies, i am still really excited about this. Now i want to know, the sky box that i have been offered for free by a friend, is a Sky plus box. The sky plus part was broken, but they continued to get their sky channels through it as normal, but had the box replaced for free with a new Sky plus box. Will the broken one be ok for Freesat?Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.0

Should be fine, as long as the receiver part was working OK.;)0
