HELP!! new line and broadband in a rented house.

Hi
Can anyone give me some advice...
I've just moved in to a rented shared house, which doesn't have an existing phone line. The landlord is fine with me getting one put in, but doesn't want to get involved in anyway. I need to get broadband for my job (I'm a freelance web developer) - so I'm desperatly trying to find the cheapest way to do this.
I have three problems -
1. Installation costs - £125 for BT!?
2. Not sure how long I'm staying - so the shorter the contract the better.
3. I'm not in a cable area.
I saw Martin say here (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/home-phone-calls#linerental) that you can get Virgin installed for £30 ?! is this cable? Or some kind of phone line alternative. Are BT the only company who can install me a phone line? (yes - I realise this may be a stupid question).
I could go with the £29.99 BT deal that Martin also mentions on that page - but 18 mths... What are the BT penalties like for cutting short a contract? Does anyone know?
Basically (aside from all the questions above) - I'm just looking for some advice with this.
Thanks in advance.

Their are people other then BT or Virgin Media Cable that will connect a landline but they normally have 12 month contracts, where a completely new installation is involved.
EG: http://www.thephone.coop/residential/linerental.html
£30 Virgin Media connection is for cable.12 month contract.
BT will charge you £70 to cancel a 12 month contract early.18 month will be dearer.
AOL are offering no contract broadband with inclusive 24/7 geographical calls . You need a BT Line to get it

The BT 18 month contract for the £29.99p connection says:
"Customers ceasing service during the minimum period of the special offer will be asked to pay, as a single payment, a sum which is equal to the total of the standard line rental charges (currently, £11.75inc. VAT per month) left in the 18 month minimum period."
http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Notice08_boo/2-FrameworkImpl268785.htm
Also note: "Customers must make at least 30 chargeable or inclusive calls every three month period or 10 chargeable calls or chargeable inclusive calls per month if you are billed monthly."0 -
Not much good to a Web Developer.:D0 -
I currently use 3 broadband, please do not even think about it for a regular connection that your work depends on. I like to develop website in my own time and regularly need to connect to my server to do a variety of jobs.
If you can only get a 3G connection then I would say that 3 broadband is far too slow and unreliable and i live in a full coverage area. If you can get HSDPA then it might be more useable.0 -

Hello all
Just to let you know that I went with the post office for putting in my landlane. It's the same as BT per month, but no contract - so can end it anytime! and only £110 (only, lol) to install.
My landlord informs me that "He doesn't get involved in phone lines"... Nice.
All I need now is some no contract broadband. Tried AOL, but they cap at 10Gb.. I'll use that in a week! Any other ideas? Or even broadband that I can take with me?
BTW, I already use 3 mobile broadband, it's very good (In the Worthing area at least) but as said - not good enough yet!
Thanks all!!0 -
O2/Be are highly regarded on tech forums and from what i've heard they don't throttle or cap the connection - yet0
