    Bargain hunters boost Poundland
Bargain-hunting shoppers have helped Poundland to a 47% surge in annual profits, the discount retailer said.
The firm - which sells everything for £1 - said like-for-like sales were up 2.1% in the year to March 29, while operating profits rose to £11.8 million from £8 million the previous year.
Poundland opened 41 new stores in the 12-month period and said it plans to continue at a similar rate, with the total estate forecast to reach 250 outlets this year.
The company, which is based in Willenhall, West Midlands, employs over 6,500 staff and currently has 212 stores nationwide. The firm expects the expansion to create 1,200 new jobs.
Chief executive Jim McCarthy said the firm had also stepped in following the collapse of high street rival Woolworths.
"We have also helped to mitigate some of the Woolworth closures this year, taking on 150 ex-Woolworth's staff and plan to open a significant number of ex-Woolworths retail units during the coming year," Mr McCarthy said.
"Consumers are having a tough time at the moment. Having a single price strategy is a big benefit, as it means they can budget easily as they shop."
He said the chain was adding top brands including Maxwell House, Kellogg's, Heinz, Pampers and Mr Muscle.
"We will continue to add to these fantastic lines, offering amazing value at £1," he said.
Poundland opened its first store in Burton-upon-Trent in December 1990. It has been owned by private equity firm Advent International since 2002.

I have to say I must be missing something because I have found most of the stuff in my local Poundland to be complete tat and I have even seen stuff that is cheaper in the local sainsburys but people fool themselves into buying stuff because it's a pound. They had 3 packets of paracetamol for a pound but sainsburys were doing their own brand for 25p a packets go figure.
    :p

The whole point of poundland is that they do alot of brands for one pound.
There deals are always under the RRP just because sainsburies has an offer on for a 3 week period selling washing up liquid for example at 67p doesnt make poundland crap because they sell it for a pound just sainsburies better on that offer.

As with all cheapy stores you have to look and know what your buying, some things in there are tat but alot of it is great! And sometimes its just because the stuff is no good to you, like a 40 yr old woman walking into a toy store trying to find a book about birds or something...

I don't think my store is crap, but strange things happen. Whenever I've seen a well recognised name on offer (for instance Sally Hansen Diamond Hard nail cream), it all disappears super quick, as if it's either been taken off the shelf or bought in bulk by someone. And I mean within hours...every shopper would have had to buy a pot in order to clear the shelf that fast!
