3 scam / being sneaky???

OK, got a MMS from 3 offering either a new Nokia 6500 Slide or £50 credit.

This reminded me that my contract must be nearly up so thought Id have a look on here and suss out how to get a better deal etc and read up on some hints and tips :-)

All was ok until I actually rang the 0800 number and got through to a woman in India that informed me that I would actually have to change my tarriff to a more expensive one or pay £50 for the handset but that's not what the MMS stated!

As it was it turns out my contract is not actually up until the 10th November so i suspect this is a sneaky way to lock you into another contract with different Terms and Conditions.
My current one is the £15 a month for life and its 75 mins free calls and 600 texts free too. I really dont want to lose that!

To be fair Im happy with the Sony Ericcsson i have but thought i would chance my arm for the N95 8GB and see, but she was trying to offer me a "deal" at only an extra £9 a month. Im not stupid, thats the website deal with the video package so i asked to be put through to cancellations but they said i couldnt as its not due yet and i could chat to her.
I even bluffed stating i was looking at going to O2 for the i phone and she advised me not to as its delicate and breaks easily if its dropped!! duh really? I told her I dont drop my phone!

So getting nowhere I told her i would be ringing back on 10th October giving my 1 month notice i think.

Anyone got any hints or tips to get an upgrade now, or a number for 3 thats not in India where i can talk to someone not reading off a script???

Also be careful that the people you are talking to may well be not related to Three at all (I can't find an 0800 number for them - what was it? Does it resolve to Three on https://www.saynoto0870.com ?). Make sure you call Three on the number they gave you when you first took out the contract or the one on their website.

Less scrupulous companies are not beyond contacting those still within a contract and pretending to be from their network operator in order to get them to "upgrade" (also known as agree to a new contract without cancelling the other).

The number for Three is 333 from your Three handset or 07782 333 333 from any other line. Sadly, this might still be in India, but I guess the option is to request your PAC code and hope that retentions is in the UK. If not, just get your PAC code and change supplier...

  • yep it seems legit but it does annoy me when i get put through to indian call centres that cant deviate from whats in front of them and are unhelpful. :(

Pretty sure for this reason alone ill be leaving them come october!
  • Think I'll wait until 22 August before changing my contract... Thanks for the information.
