Broadband Cut-Out Problems - Wireless Router Responsible or ISP?

We set up an account with Plusnet (Broadband Plus) about 2 weeks ago and got a wireless router of our own. However, the green light which normally when on shows that it is connected, keeps switching off, then flashing yellow, then back to green, then off again, flashing yellow, constant green... etc.
It doesn't matter whether the light is on green or not, the broadband isn't on. THe laptop connects to the router fine but the net doesn't work. I tried to sign in to to MSN Messenger but it came back saying something about the DNS and something else about the 'ports'.
It doesn't happen all the time - I was using it this morning without any problems but this first happened last night when I actually phoned PLusnet then it started working magically just as my call was answered by tech support. However today it cut out an hour ago.
Also, I'm hearing some hissing on the phone and some bleeping, which I assume is to do with the router. There is a microfilter installed and all was working fine.
As it's a shared connection among 3 laptops, the guy who brought the router with him has set it up so that it only allows our three wireless MAC cards to connect, although from other wireless PCs/laptops our network still shows up as an "unsecured network configured for public access" but doesn't allow any other connections.
The router is switched off at the mains at the moment as it is fairly warm, but shouldn't they be capable of being switched on 24/7?
Would appreciate your help techies!
I do know a fair bit about computers but zilch about broadband
. Cheers guys.

a Router should stay on 24hrs without probs, but what make is the router? Do you have a microfilter installed because if not that's why you'll hear the noises and that is probably what's causing the disconnetion... but I'm by no means an expert. That, is an excellent question...0

I do have a microfilter on the line and the router is a Netgear, unsure of model no. but it's the "ADSL Wireless Router with Firewall".
I don't know what's with the noises, they aren't there now but that's because the router is switched off.0 -
Best thing to do is find out the model you have. It should be somewhere on the router. Then pop over to the Netgear Forums as see if it's a common problem between users.

Thanks for that, I've just found out from looking at the bottom of the router that it is the DG834G v2. I've posted a query on the Wireless Routers board of the Netgear forum, but I don't see any issues with this particular model...
Could it be the ISP?0 -

Thanks all for your replies - I've phoned BT and it has come back as a 'possible line fault' as I heard some crackling while the router was switched off. I'm still waiting for them to get back to me. I wonder if I could activate that free call divert to mobile now??0

Its possible you are too far from their exchange for the line speed they have provisionned.......even if you have only 512k and a 2Mb line, you must be within the distance for the 2Mb. BT can come round and measure the distance for you......if its too far for a decent signal, you may need the ISP to change your connection.
Also Ive been reading recently about rain affecting ADSL.....not sure if this is real or not though.illegitimi non carborundum0 -
I've just got a call from BT who say there isn't a fault on our line. The guy said it could be an equipment fault or broadband fault, but he'd be inclined to check the equipment.
Nothing's been said about the length of our line, apart from before we signed up when the Plusnet Sales team said that to us. I guess after testing the router (which is being done now), we'll have to contact Plusnet.
Any other ideas on what it could be?We don't get any broadband now as it tries to connect and the light blinks yellow, then stops.

So you have an intermittent connection.CrazyChemist wrote:Also, I'm hearing some hissing on the phone and some bleeping, which I assume is to do with the router. There is a microfilter installed and all was working fine.
Patently notWith a filter in place you will be oblivious to the ADSL presence.
What type of phone do you have?
Who supplied the ADSL filters?
You may or may not have faulty equipment, it's a process of elimination to determine that.
A blinking yellow indicates a sync problem with the ADSL.
Disconnect all telephone equipement including SKY boxes et al.
Only connect the router.
Does the LED now go green?0
