They stop cheques and all of a sudden it's "so last decade" There was nothing wrong with cheques, just greedy big shops wanting their money right away.

or possibly because cheques get forged/copied/altered all the time, so it's hardly the most reliable way to take payment. nevermind the people who issue cheques to pay for something and don't actually have the money in the bank. Now I work in a bank I avoid using cheques like the plague!

People who do this are probably the ones who tear the top of banknotes to see if they are real, sigh..

i agree, big sigh! there's loads more ways to check if a note is real without wrecking it!

i really dont think cheques are that bad, its a bit of a stress if you get a ne checkout person who has no idea what to do with cheque payments. and there is all kinds of forgery and fraud when it comes to money (inc card and cash fraud). LOL cheque fraud makes me think of that film with Leo' DiCaprio.... 'Catch me if you can'

    Top Tip.
Always fold the cheque along the numbers at the bottom, it will have to be processed manually and take longer to clear.....

    B

Nonsense. When a cheque is paid into the bank, that bank puts the value of the cheque along the bottom using a franking type machine. The cashier simply has to keep it straight, add the number and sent it off...

well, i don't know where you work, but i'm a cashier and we don't do that.
we simply check the cheque to make sure everything is in order, and send it off. most of the cheques are read by machine, but some have to be processed manually, but I doubt it ever takes much longer.

I used to prefer cheques as it was so much easier to fill in the stubbs and know exactly how much you had in your account each month than with a debit card.Too many bits of paper to lose!

I agree, when I was really really broke. And I mean so broke I used to take a sick day because I had no money to buy fuel to get to work. I used to only ever use cheques. This meant I could update my spreadsheet daily and knew to the penny how much I didn't have.

I also used to cash cheques at work and pay the cash into the bank on the last two days before pay day, so that I would not go overdrawn.

I used to also draw cash off the credit card in Debenhams to pay the minimum credit card payment back into the bank over the road. Those were bad days....

But I agree, sometimes cheques help you see just how much you a spending, cards do not feel like real money. With cheques, it is all there in black and white.
I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 2010
  • Most stores are stopping their acceptance of cheques. They are a pain to process on most of todays tills. They have their place though-for the few people who shop by post now and then. I rarely ever use them. Keep a small notebook instead of the cheque stubs. Depending on a few days grace for chequest to clear just gets you in debt as you may well end up overdrawn accidentaly. Windowcleaners need to ask their customers for cash. I wouldnt dream of paying a window cleaner with a cheque personally.
