No Dial Tone (oh yes there is!) on AOL

Hi

I'm trying to help my other half get onto AOL.
She's signed up for broadband (which will take a week or two) and has been told she can use dial-up until the broadband is ready.

I did the same thing last year with no probs.

However, after installing everything it keeps saying that there is no dial tone at the modem. I've checked everything obvious (& tried it with my laptop & modem which I know works) and wondered if anyone had any advice or knew if the following may be the problem;

a) there is an old extension bell that is connected to the master socket
b) there is an alarm system but this would only use the line when the alarm was set off
c) it is a big house and there are extension leads used (although I am trying to connect directly to the master socket)

If any of these are likely to be the problem, could I expect them to be resolved when the broadband is enabled?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated
Thanks

    Hi Simon,

I would be interested to know how your better half got on.

Presumably the house is now enjoying "max" broadband c/o carphone warehouse ?

If you look at my postings on the Madasafish (MAAF) thread, I was a few weeks behind you.

I've now got our place working well, with filters infront of all telephone kit, except for the telephonebell in the garden, which is still disconnected.

Some helpful people on the "thinkbroadband" web site have probably pointed me in the right direction, but it looks like you were heading for a similar situation to mine, so I'd be interested to know how you got on.

We found that BT responded much quicker than the 10 days MAAF suggested. As soon as our line started to be BB enabled the dial up speed fell through the floor and our dial-up ISP could not cope with someone trying to make contact at 1400 baud. We got all sorts of funny messages and drop outs - a fine incentive to get the new kit installed.

    Best wishes,

    Harry
