The equivalant of the dangerous dog legislation in Ireland has always been much stricter than here. When the laws were made (late 80's/early 90's mainly in reaction to the spate of dog attacks in the UK) they have always been based on dog weight rather than breed albeit that some breeds are banned as are here.
At the time we had a collie cross who because she was so fat was just over the 30 kg limit so should have been muzzled, on lead etc but at the time the law wasn't strictly enforced and it was mainly ignored.

In the past 5 years or so these laws have been revived and strenthened especially in Dublin and owning anything other a little lap dog type that is happy with a pootle up and down the road is very difficult as council by laws basically forbid having anything bigger in public so your dog is effectively confined to your property and road lead walks. While this annoys me and prevents me from bringing my dogs to Dublin what really worries me is that I see the signs of something very similar happening here, again it's councils restricting access to public areas using ill mannered dogs( and owners) , H&S etc as an excuse and it just goes on from there.......something to be aware of maybe?
