University Fee Problems ** Urgent Help Required**

Due to what I precieve to be an overwhelming barriage of slagging off by a small minority of what seem to be long term posters who should know better I have decided to remove my initial post. Some of the post have been constructive and I have taken on board alot of the advice and have subsequently arranged a meeting with my students union and course director to possibly arrange completing the outstanding work.

Did you never question why you were allowed to progress?

Did you never think to catch up on the missed coursework and exams?

I was not aware at any point that I had outstanding coursework or exams until 2 weeks before my finals, had I been aware there would have been no question I would have mad the effort to catch up.

But you knew that you had not done the work - how could you not be aware?

Sorry, I misquoted myself about year 1, I actually did complete the coursework I just didnt get a high enough mark. I was writing the first post as from today, and making the statements as a result of the facts I now have. So for example, if I say I failed 2 exams in year 2, I was not actually aware of this until final year :)

This still does not make sense.

At the end of each year you would have received a statement of results. Did you not receive this, and if not, why did you not ask? Surely you would want to know what marks you got? Equally with the coursework, surely you got feedback on your performance, or asked for it?

It is not unusual for a university to allow you to progress with outstanding work (but not usually as much as you had). However, in this situation it is your responsibility to make arrangements to complete the outstanding requirements.

Approx 5 years ago I started a post grad course at my local university, studying Business Studies with Marketing, the first year was good however the lecturers where forever missing the classes and progress was slow....

Maybe it's something else you missed in your course... Universities are like businesses. Why would they stop you paying them money, just because you're not pulling your weight (for various valid reasons, maybe, but they weren't the Uni's problems) .Would you pay a removal company to take your stuff away, but not bother to check it's getting to it's destination?

You went to uni to get these grades, how could you not check you had them?

Year 3 was a placement year within the workforce, but with the death of 2 grandparents within 6 months of each other I found it extremely difficult to concentrate of the course and did not complete the end of year coursework.

You can probably see where I am going with this but, despite having the outstanding coursework from year 1, 2 failed exams in year 2 and having no coursework submitted for year 3, yes I was allowed to progress to final year. I must point out at this time that at no time did the university contact me directly about progressing despite having the outstanding items. I was contacted however about my fees and paid in full for year 3 during the course of the term.

The main reasons for this post however is concerning the payment of fees to the university, I now have a letter of demand from a debt collection agency demanding the remainder of the fees from year 4 of which I did not complete.

You did complete the final year if you were only two weeks away from the final exams.

So you did submit the coursework in year one but did not get the results?

You failed 2 exams in year 2 but, again, did not get the results?

And you completed NO coursework in year 3 but did not realise you hadn't?

Are you having a laugh?

I imagine if you read the T&Cs for you course, it quite clearly stated that you are responsible for monitoring your progression, by completing the relevent modules and assessments. We have a modular system at my uni and it is 100% our responsibility to ensure we follow a legitimate path for the particular qualification we sign up for.

Final year arrived, and I completed all my coursework attended all the Christmas exams but 2weeks before I was to sit my finals I was told that despite paying for years 1,2 & 3 they where considered in-valid because there was outstanding exams & coursework. I was told that I would have to spend all of Summer 08 completing the items for a possible graduation in January. I was absolutely fuming and decided to leave the university early and not complete my final summer exams. I had a meeting with the course director about why I was allowed to progress for so long despite having so much outstanding work, he responded by telling me that he was “doing me a favour and showing leniency”

If the University will let you work over summer to complete the course - and if it's feasible for you to do this - wouldn't that be the best option? While fees can be expensive, you've spent years working on the course: so surely graduating would be the best outcome, if at all possible. You may or may not be able to get out of paying any outstanding fees (IANAL, but I'd be amazed if you got any of what you've already paid back), but I suspect the degree would be considerably more valuable - and better to spend your time and energy on this than on a protracted attempt to avoid paying outstanding fees.

this is not a great situation but the best thing you can do is get in touch with the university about the money they are chasing. you do not want this to escalate to bailffs at the door. you may get the best possible advice from the student union or student services. go in with all the paperwork asap as they will be in the best position to know how to proceed. face to face help is the best way to deal with this.

"The main reasons for this post however is concerning the payment of fees to the university"

you could always pay the money you owed for the courses you took?....they were showing a fair bit of leniency as you say...so why should you avoid the fees.....can everyone get a refund if they fail?.....at the end of the day I would have thought with your academic record you should have maybe quit after the first year....failure seems to be one of your best qualities
