If you don't tell the bank then you are committing theft by finding, as you know it isn't yours, hasn't been abandoned, and you haven't taken reasonable steps to notify the owner.0

It isn't yours, tell the bank immediately, the person it belongs to might need the money urgently, how would you feel if it was the other way round and it was your money that went missing?Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

I can guarantee that the extra money will be found and taken out eventually, Id make sure that you write a letter to the bank, and always keep it in until they take it back.
Can you tell if it is a cashier mistake or another agencies mistake? If it is a deposit that was done in the branch you can bet that it will be traced and taken out, if it has come in via Bacs or something from a company then they will ask the bank to retrieve it if they realise their mistake.
The only time it will be yours if the bank writes to you confirming that there is no error and the ££ are yours, even then id take it with a pinch of salt!

The money is likely to be taken without any prior notice to the OP so they don't have the choice anyway.
I bet you wouldn't be giving that advice if there was any chance the money was yours would you?0 -
ring up bank and tell them about mistake and confirm it in writing. keeping the money and saying nothing is just not worth the risk of being done for theft. something similiar happened to my friend and the bank did find out about it. it was in an account my friend rarely used and stupidly? didn't check that often. the bank took the money back and wrote to them explaining position. the bank were right- it wasn't their money.0

Why does this always happen to other people?
Tell them, don't touch it 'cos they will 'av yer if you keep it and don't!0 -
You could put it in an instant access account and earn a bit of interest off it. That way if/when they ask for it back you can return it with no problems.
They will find out about it in the end though.0
