Lloyds accounts and errors with addresses.

We have been receiving post at our address for the previous occupier who moved almost 18mths ago. OH and I are both lloyds customers and are really hacked off with them for many reasons and this development is just the icing on the cake.

Since May 07 I have returned everything to them for him, written to them a few months ago and given his new address according to phone book and in past month spoken to branch who assured me all has been sorted and no further mail would be sent from x date.

In last 2 months since writing letter started opening all mail only to find debt collection letter for £16,000 and agents saying they will visit. We also received a statement for him last month which is the first oen I believe in 18 mths. (you can generally tell what a bank statement due to apperance through envelope window)

I reckon Lloyds have messed up and never fully changed his loan address and now they have mistakely changed all accounts to our address hence why we are now receiving statements.

After speaking to them at branch I have since received paying in book/cheque book (not sure as didnt open just returned), more letters advising him of charges and debt collection letters.

I have spoken to branch on Friday and told them in no uncertain terms that if after 4th August (gave them grace for any letters in system) we receive a single item of mail for him then we will be closing all 5 of our accounts with them (2 savings, 2 sole,1 joint) with them and switching home insurance. They have finally agreed to change the address.

I also queried another previous occuppier who was receiving notices of loan payments here. Addressed to my address and since found out she now lives around the corner. the agent actually admitting address not updated.

So now I have a bit of a moral dilemna. Should i ring the previous occupier who must be incurring huge charges and tell him what has been happening? There was another thread on here by the haymans and I would hate for him to be same situ as them. Also they are known through friends of friends as this is a small town and they only live a few streets away

Why did you open his letters? You realise thats against the law?

You should have just left it, write on the letters "No Longer at this address' and shove it back in the post. Instead of going through all the hassle of phoning the bank etc. leave it, its their problem. Not much effort for you to write 5 words on letters is it?
  • I personally wouldn't get involved-this person must be shying away from their responsibilities to have accrued so much debt. It's not your responsibility to do the banks job-let them find their customer and deal with it. Plus you don't want to drag yourself into the dispute. Plus the prev occupants could kick off with the bank because you opened the mail and you'll end up being dragged in. Plus if the person who has the debt is a bit of a funny begger, they could report you for opening the mail-I know this is rare, and if I was you I would of been annoyed and at my wits end with the letters too, wondering what was going on, so I don't blame you for opening the letters. I personally wouldn't dare because it's illiegal and I'd be frightened of being told off but personally, my advice is to steer clear and let Lloyds TSB deal with it! It's not your problem to handle and you probably would be better off without the stress. Going forward-put 'no longer at this address' on the envelopes and hand it to Lloyds or your local postman!
Loan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!
All debt consolodated and cards destroyed!!
As D'Ream would sing 'Things.....can only get better'!!!
  • My OH mentioned about it being illegal opening mail but no idea what the law is on this. First letter Im opened was a geuine mistake but since then been worried

The 16000 is for a loan. they are now getting charges as overdrawn.

You are right I wont get involved but if anything else come I will be closing our accounts.....actually just going to close them anyway as Lloyds really have treated us badly. Was with HSBC for years and no trouble. But OH wanted joint account to be with lloyds

Postal Services Act 2000 (Part V, section 84)?

"...liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or to both."

Thats good, you can only be banged up for 6 months ;)

However, why did you get so upset and so angry at Lloyds just because you kept getting letters for someone else? I could understand if it was recoded and you have to keep goin to post office to get it when its not yours. But its not exactly effort looking down at your post to not see your name on it lol
  • Dont feel too bad though. This people keep having there tax discs sent here. done it twice. How stupid is that! i know it was tax discs as mine arrived at same time

Because the one i open in error (honest this is how it all started) said that an agent would be calling at my address re debt collection
  • And at the time Lloyds had balls up our account also. So already hacked off!
  • Plus we seem to be getting more post than ever for this couple now....registered with Mail preference service yesterday. Didnt realised you could do this for previous occupants. We receive at least one item of post a day...often more....for them. Been returning it to sender for 18 mths now.
