Hot Or Cold Fill?

My washing machine is sited some distance from the hot water tank, therefore the "hot" water that goes in initially is in fact water that has cooled off in the pipes leading to it. The electric heater built into the washing machine then heats up to the set temp.
The hot water that is now in the pipes cools down (perhaps heating the house a bit)
My question is, Would it be more economic to cold fill only? I don't know whether a W/machine draws hot water more than once during the wash cycle which would alter the answer.
Is hot or cold fill best assuming that hot from the tank does not actually reach the W/machine on first fill?
The pipes are insulated to minimise heat loss but obviously cool overnight.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

  • As far as I know , hot fill machines are a dying breed. We had hot & cold suplies plumbed into our laundry room only to find that 99.9% of machines were cold fill. This probably doesn't answer your question though.... more for general info purposes.

Modern cold fill washing machines use surprisingly little electricity.

Most of the wash programs on my 5 year old Bosch are between 0.4kWh to 0.9kWh(the 90C whites program with pre-wash uses 1.9kWh) and that includes all the electricity for motor and pumping.

So the saving for using a hot fill will be minimal, if any.
