Dig/camera required under £150

I am looking for a digital camera. I'd like one which is under £150, has about 8 mega pixels, face recognition (whatever that is) and anti shake.

It is for my daughter as a gift. She has requested these features.

Before I start trawling photographic shops/sites, I wondered if anyone is a user of such a thing.

I recently bought a nice Fuji 8000 from their "refurbished" website, often have others for sale. Cost about 125.00 great camera with a big zoom.

Only one though for you is to find out if she is looking for compact camera so it slips in the pocket. I know at least 3 people who have bought so called 'bridge cameras' or in one case a DSLR and all regaret it. They all would rather have had the convenience of something that slips in the pocket.

I have a Panasonic FZ18 (bridge type camera) and also am starting to wish I had bought the Panasonic TZ3 (pocketable) .

I have the panasonic FZ18 and I LOVE it. But I do agree, you have to decide whether you want a bridge canera which is bulkier, or a smaller pocket compact.

I took a lot of time researching, last January, before I bought but as an Estate Agent an excellent camera. But just retired so no longer going into big briefcase. Looking at giving it to one of my family (they don't know yet and will have a major surprise) and starting looking again!

canon sd 850 from the canon refurb shop on ebay for around £130
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
  • I'm also a panny fan, got an FZ5 (12x zoom bridge camera), L10 (DSLR) and an FX33 (pocket sized)

My FX33 gets the most use as it goes to places a lot easier

Typically, Canon makes the best small cameras. Pannys are a bit cheaper and come with more 'toys', but Canon have a great rep.

This: would be an ace camera: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-IXUS-80-Digital-Camera/dp/B0012ZEDV4/ref=pd_ts_zbw_ce_560836_2?pf_rd_p=195504591&pf_rd_s=right-5&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=560834&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1DHXY7PN1RBDGGQCVF81

This also gets a good review:

Ooops nearly forgo to say and very important!

Most compacts don't have viewfinders and those that do are very small. LCD screens are very poor in the sun. My Panny FZ18 has both and because I have been shooting most of my shots outside I find I have mostly used the view finder. But my LCD screen has an extra option to alter a setting of shooting in bright sun.

Whilst it might not be everyone's cup of tea, this has been brought to my attention. Samsung Digimax S760 Digital Camera it is much cheaper than I anticipated spending.

I've got a sony T70 - fits all the criteria of the OP, takes some lovely photos and is *proper* pocket sized. It's also one of the best looking cameras you'll see...
