You need to display a valid tax disc. When you buy the disc online it gives a number to call in case it does not arrive.

I drove today, yesterday and also Friday without the new disc displayed, I've not been arrested or fined. Maybe I was lucky.

I popped the new disc in the window tonight, I'll sleep soundly now :)

OP - If 5 working days have passed give them a call

Don't worry, you can drive your car to work on Monday, Tuesday, Wed & Thursday (5 Work days) If your disc does not arrive tomorrow, phone the helpline
and ask if you can have a refund, and then arrange to obtain a new disc from a Post Office before next Friday. Actually, if you get a refund arranged you probably should go and buy from the PO straight away, but they may have a set procedure which does not include refunds, if so, listen to what they have to say.

You will not be fined by police, if they do, the fine will not be lawful and you can have the ticket overturned.

    Under certain conditions, which are...

If you apply for your licence renewal before expiry you have 5 work days after expiry date, during which days you do not have to display a valid disc.

 Is that what they told you? Do they just refund you on the stop? Surely if you call them, they send a replacement or require a form to say you've not got it?

I have found they normally arrive very fast. Might be worth chasing it up.
