I brought a laptop in february from aldi. I have always brought my computers from there and up until now never had a problem with one. The laptop was for a birthday present and so didn't get used for the first time until end of June. Since using it it's had problems crashing dumping it's physical memory and burnt out its power supply! Considering the machine isn't even 6 months old I find this pretty shocking. I have been in touch with medion who make the laptop and have tried a couple of theit suggestions, none of which have worked. Their next step is to take is in for repair, which I not too happy about considering how new this laptop is, I would rather not risk anything else going wrong have a new one. I have tried going back to Aldi where I brought it from, who really don't want me to have my money back. At first they tried to pass it off as a manufacturers problem as it was past 30 days, and then said that under the consumer rights act i'm only entitled to the manufactuers repair...is this correct?? I was under the impression that if goods are not fit for purspose you were entiltled to a repair, replacement or refund? Can anyone please advise

you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund - but it's the retailers choice which you get.0

I had a similar problem with a CD player when I returned it as faulty after 6 months. They would not refund or exchange it, and were not interested in sorting a repair, as they said the warranty was with the manufacturer and not Aldi.
Tried calling the manufacturer and after a 10 minute call to a Delhi call centre gave up.
Still not happy, as I thought the contract was with the supplier and they would be obliged to sort a repair.
Anyone else had trouble with them?0 -
Same thing here
I bought a portable DVD player at the end of June. Last week on holiday it stopped reading dvds- took it back today - they refused an exchange or refund and referred me to the manufacturer- as it was past 30 days.
This is unacceptable service- most other retailers will sort this out for the first year.
However, under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, I maintain that Aldi, as the trader, must sort out this problem and I should not be referred back to the manufacturer. It must have been an inherent or design fault to fail so soon after purchase.
I've contacted the manufacturer but I'm going to follow this up as a matter of principle.
In the meantime I would advise caution when buying electicals etc from Aldi. They've gone from the best after sales to the worst. :mad:0 -

People forget though, in the clamour to quote their rights, that going to the manufacturer is often the quickest and easiest route.0

Doesn't taking that route further exclude you from any protection under the SOGA though?
Best advice to OP is contact trading standards, it is up to the retailer to sort it, and to give you further protection it should be done through them, this way if repairs are carried out to an unsatisfactory standard there is furtHer action that can be taken under the SOGA.click here to achieve nothing!0 -

but surely- taking it back to exchange at a local store is quickest and easiest? If a trader is not prepared to replace a faulty item after just 6 weeks they won't be getting my trade in future.0 -

I think that FlameCloud was referring to the OP, who bought their item in February. You might get a better response if you start your own thread.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Retailers like Aldi sell many types of product and for each one will have something in place if something goes wrong. You cant expect them to replace every item, some will be repaired and as a previous poster said the choice is with them. They are also allowed to have the unit inspected by qualified personnel. They are not doing anything else other than fulfilling your rights and theirs under SOGA. The manufactures helpline is quicker than you leaving it with them, them calling/sending it off and you coming back to collect it when its done. It may only take a couple of days off of a repair but it is collected and returned to you.I have done this myself and found it quick and easy.0
