i dont have a lot from the garden so i keep mine in a pail in a cool, dark place, they need to be kept out of light as they will go green, i also put a newspaper on top too, in winter they need to be frost free and away from mice

Old pillow cases. Preferably doubled up or made of dark fabric. Potatoes need to be stored in a cool dark dry place so fabric bags are ideal (Lots of gardening websites sell hessian sacks for this purpose, but I find cotton is fine). Also good for storing root vegetables and onions. Under the stairs would be good, if you have a cupboard there. Obviously not if you have a bookcase or coat rack there :)
  • Thanks for the idea about cotton - I really dont want to buy the hessian ones as they are not cheap.

I have various old pillow cases that I can use.

make sure you lift the potatoes on a dry day and leave them on the ground to dry a while before storing them

Yup, pillow case under the stairs.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

    Hi lily the pink,

We have an older thread on the same subject that should help you, so I'll merge your thread with it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together. The posts are listed in date order, so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

We keep ours in a cardboard box in our entry, which is cool, dark and dry.

I've had trouble keeping veg as well, this seems to work for me
  • And remember if you are storing them in a shed, watch out for mice:eek:

I stored mine in our shed the winter before last, with no problems, and then last year we had a whole army of mice, move in.

This year I have two cats:p So mices beware:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
  • I would reiterate a previous post and store them in a closed paper carrier bag in a cool dark place - and store with an apple enclosed!

Weird but works - despite being sceptical at the time!

    Hope this helps
  • We grow our own, so often have a lot to store.

I just grab smallish cardboard boxes from the supermarket (the ones that held 6 bottles of wine are ideal) to store them in.

Put a layer of newspaper in the bottom, and put more newspaper between each layer of spuds. this stops any rot from spreading too much if any develops.

Another layer of newspaper on the top, then fold the box flaps over (without sealing them), and we keep the boxes in the garage.

Using small boxes means rot, if any, doesn't affect the whole crop.
