Marks & Spencer sofa really uncomfortable
Comments
-
I put some MDF in under the cushions, keeps the base/springs underneath the seat cushions really like new for years0

As for being subjective - I would be surprised if anyone prefers to be swallowed up when they sit!
This has suddenly got me thinking about an aspect of the SOG's act.
This is no speculative comment about you Andy or the op but it could be the cause!
I'm now going to write something some people may find offensive/controversial (even more than normal) but ultimately true.
The SOG act considers cost when assuming how long a product should last. Some products have more variables that determine their life span.
Here we go..............
Does the SOG act consider the weight of a person when working out how long a sofa should last! Come on think about it, it would have an effect!0 -
I'm not so sure about that andy... oooh-er...
ha ha, I was talking about sitting on the sofa, must have led a sheltered life:D:D
Tim - take your point, but even so, you should expect more than a year from a quality sofa, and I guess it should be constructed to take all kinds of people! (within reason - I've seen those TV programmes as well!)0 -
Can you post a link to the sofa in question.0

Thanks for your replies.
In our opinion the sofa has deteriorated over the 10 months and it seems to be the springs in the base as the cushions are still quite firm.
When anyone sits on the sofa the back of the seat sinks down with a gap at the lower back. After a few minutes the person sitting on the sofa
seems to slouch and sit "twisted".
My M-i-L wont sit on the sofa as she says it gives her a bad back and other guests say it is uncomfortable.
I am disappointed because I thought a M&S sofa would last longer than a cheaper one and, wrongly it seems, I thought I would get good customer
service.
If they had put on the website that it would soften so much in such a short time then I would not have bought the sofa and I wonder how many other people would take the risk.
It does not have the same support as the one we tried in the store which is why I believe I have been sold an inferior item. If it was over 2 or 3 years old then I would expect the support to have softened a little.
uktim - you could have a valid point in some instances - I weigh 10 stone and my husband weighs 15 so I wouldnt say weight was the problem here!

Sorry I dont know how to post a link - it is the large 2 seater sofa in the Urbino range.0

1000 volts - your sofa sounds pretty similar to the one I described, although our cushions were useless too.
I'm from the era when 'you get what you pay for' but I don't always see that applies these days. You will have paid a reasonable amount at M&S, though I wouldn't expect them to specialise. The link you refer to states a range of prices. My current suite is about 30-35 years old, is inherited from the age I refer to (when you got quality if you paid) and is still comfy and supportive, and doesn't do the nonsense of tipping you backwards into its depths! We are the second family to use it and although oh is about average - 15 stone - he's tough on furniture, iyswim.
Have you spoken to TS for advice? I'm sure you aren't the only one.0 -
This one?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Interesting situation. I can understand that it may lose some support but whether this is in keeping with normal standards is somethign which I don't think we can comment on.
OP - what do other people say about it (and try not to be biased!!!)?0 -
We are still using a sofa which my mother bought from Maples in about 1965. While it has been recovered twice, there has never been a problem with the springs or support from the padding.
I would like to replace it with one in a more modern style, but having tested dozens in various shops and found them of dreadful quality, and having seen how short a time friends' new sofas last I have been completely discouraged and will probably end up getting ours recovered once more. The gape between the seat and back seems to be the most common fault I have seen with modern sofas.
I think that 10 months is a ludicrous length of time for a sofa to last. I would expect a minimum of 5 years given reasonable use (ours is used every day, has been bounced on by kids, sat on by very heavy people etc.)
Surely there are quality standards for furniture? Whatever happened to the 'Kite Mark'? Given that one expects M&S goods to be of good quality, I think you should complain.0
