Do you 'hide' your greenhouse...

Hi All!

Wondering if everyone tries to conceal the greenhouse from view, or is it just 'there'?

Currently ours is at the side of the house, so hidden, but we want that bit as veg area, which means greenhouse comes to back of the house & is less cosmeticallly appealing, to look at.

Or am I mistaken??

Thanks in advance!

But the greenhouse already is a veg area??

You don't want to move it unless you have to..... and if you want to get rid of it, I'd just like to ask why?

It's in the 'right' area, I know, but we want to have this area as veg plot AND a potential access area, to the back of the house, if needed.

The greenhouse being a bit too permanent, if we wanted to shift it!! At the moment it's got the glass out, as we already had to move it, for the building works & not wanting to do it too often!!

I don't have anywhere 'hidden' to put my greenhouse but personally I love to see it anyway. It also stops me forgetting that things need doing in there.

I'm with skintmama - I see no reason to hide my greenhouses, even though they're homemade ones that could never be considered aesthetically beautiful!

I think it is all just a matter of personal taste. Personally I'm not hung up about it. The way I look at this is that my garden is an expression of who I am and what I do. And I am a thrifty person who likes to make do and who grows her own veg, so having the greenhouses on show suits me right down to the ground! I have 'beautiful' bits and 'practical' bits and so does my garden :rotfl:

Seriously, though, if you don't want to look at your greenhouse every day, there are ways to deal with it. I don't know what your greenhouse looks like, but here are a few ideas: You could put up bamboo or trellis screening if that wouldn't block out too much light, Have a couple of potted fruit trees in front of it, or just make sure you keep your most aesthetically pleasing plants on the 'display' side of the greenhouse. If it's a metal greenhouse and that's why you don't think it's good looking, you could stain some waste wood and construct a faux frame to cover the aluminium (I know someone who did this and it looks like a cedar one!)

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I've always felt that greenhouses should be out of direct sun, otherwise you have to go to the trouble of installing some sort of shading, especially in the summer, otherwise everything can get burnt. The idea of a greenhouse (in my opinion) is to protect the contents from wind/sun/scorching/frost etc. So, if a greenhouse is situated in any area rather being in the open, you are getting it right?.

My greenhouse is on display in our garden! I love being able to see my plans grow, this is the first year we have had a veg patch in the garden and saved up last year to get the greenhouse to grow seedlings, so we are quite proud of it and the plants we have growing!

Regarding the sun, we have shading on one side of it where it gets full sun at midday. We didn't have it at first and alot of our small plants got scorched. We bought proper shading, although with hindsight I would have used something as a substite as for what it is it was quite expensive.

I read the title as being "Do you hide IN your greenhouse" :rotfl:

My answer to that would be YES, frequently ;):D

It's pointless trying to hide mine it's directly under the flight path of an international airport, millions have seen it day and night:rotfl: (I have electric lights in it)
You can see the pilots some days.

There is no point in having one if you are to embarassed by it.I live a lot of my life in it and dont give a monkeys what anyone else thinks.
If you think this has helped make my day and hit the thanks button:beer:

I always thought you were of the female variety? Isn't it only men that hide in their greenhouses?

Anyway, mine is green aluminium (the OH wanted it, I couldn't care what it looks like) so no it isn't hidden at all.

Regards to the question about it being in full sun, yes it should be and yes it protects against wind/rain etc, in the summer you do need to shade it because it will get too hot and if you want to grow in winter, some kind of insulation helps apparently (not done it yet).
The trick is to keep it cool enough, yet still let enough light in.

I have found btw that 3/4's of the greenhouse covered in shade mesh is good enough to keep it cool with damping down now and again, although it does get slightly hotter than the recommended 30 degrees.
