glouchester pie ( savoury bread and butter pudding)

Gloucester(shire) pie is made from lamb, onions, apples, swede and potatoes. Nothing like savoury bread and butter pudding :D

Well I don't like tomatoes either so I'll try the throwing ham etc in. The bread and butter pudding idea sounds much easier. I'm trying to cut down on meat and lamb is very expensive where I am.

there is loads of advice on cheap meals on here my favourites are the cheese and potato pie, but it takes a while to cook or bottom of the fridge pasta sauce.......last nights version had onion, celery and peppers in it as well as a rasher of bacon and 4 slightly dried up slices of pepperoni + 1 can of chopped Toms...it took my 12yr old 20mins to make from start to finish and i am pretty sure that at least 5mins of that was feeding the guinea pigs bits of the chopped veg! 2 pots though  hope it doesnt put you off :D

i second the cheese and potato pie with homemade bread is nice, my auntie makes her cheese and potato pie with an egg in it.
we sometimes have cheap nights like ham egg and chips or burgers, jacket potaotes.
try to have a few no meat days or try adding lentils to your mince to bulk it out.

    Hi Twinklie:hello:

Hmmm! Cheap easy and little washing up? If you do find such meals, let me know! :rotfl:

So is the batch cooking for you and OH at the weekend ? Or just for the freezer in general?

    Do you like soups?

I dont like mushies either :o:eek:

For the freezer you could make in batches

    Basic tomato pasta sauce
    - can be added to cooked pasta, used as a pizza base, mixed with cooked chicken and put in baked potatoes, fry up some mince and add the sauce for spag bol, add lentils for lentilaise (?)

This is a really good thread - building blocks for the freezer - where you can transform the dish (much as the pasta sauce)

    Batch cooking ideas please

    Plate pies can be frozen

    Potato wedges
also and home made oven chips

    Chicken casserole

    sausage casserole

if you aren't into washing many pots - have you thought about borrowing a slow cooker to see if that would be any use (before buying one?)

You could have a toast night - something on toast
    or toastie

An egg based meal - omelette, spanish omelette,
fried egg and beans and toast

To be honest, you will never get good home cooking with very little dishes, but for me it's a small price to pay for being able to lift out a pie in the morning to defrost for that night, then the potato wedges go in from frozen in the oven, add baked beans/frozen veg - one dish in microwave.

Monthly meal planning - how do you do it? may be useful for you to plan in advance

There is a thread which shows how much people use for their shopping bills (can't put my finger on it right now), or of course you could join the grocery challenge - one for each month and the top of the OS board

I'll merge your thread later, when my b rain can remember the thread it needs to go into. I will update here :)

Hope some of these links help:)
    Zip

EDIT - THINK I REMEMBERED! Grocery shopping budget thread :j:j

Oh also easy cheap vegetarian recipes :)

    Easy chicken curry recipe

Or if you think of a specific dish - there is a really good guide to searching here with cool pictures so you can follow it exactly - and you will be able to find threads in no time:A

OOH actually now you come to mention it. I'm contemplating a slow cooker. Are they worth it? And can you leave them cooking when you go to work or is that not safe? Would i have to do it when I get in at night?
